Website’s Search Engine Malfunction

I recently updated my website’s header. When I updated it, the search bar didn’t have the “clear text” button underneath it. Not its showing all of a sudden. How can I remove this? I do not like how it looks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello.

I just ran a whois lookup on your site, and it appears you are using WordPress.com.

So I can further understand your issue, can you please clarify what seaearch engine your site uses?

on Chrome for Android, there is a Clear Text. See if clearing your browser cache helps.

  • Hello Gabrielle,

    Thanks for reaching out!

It sounds like the “clear text” button in the search bar appeared after you updated your website’s header, and you’d prefer to remove it.

This button typically appears in specific browsers, such as Chrome for Android, and might not have been visible before due to particular browser settings or caching. To start, could you try clearing your browser cache to see if that helps resolve the issue?

If the button still appears and you’d like to remove it, you may need to add some custom CSS to hide it. I’d be happy to assist you with this further if needed.

Let me know how it goes, and feel free to share any additional details, including which browser and device you’re using to view your site.

    Looking forward to your response!

    Hello,

I tried clearing my browser cache and its still showing. I got so tired of trying to tinker with it that I completely changed my header, hoping that by doing that it would “reset” itself. Clearly it did not. I work out of Chrome on a laptop when making website changes as its easier that way. I would love to know how to hide this as it is very unsightly.

    Thank you

  • Thank you for testing that! I’ve checked over your site, and it appears that the search option you’re using is created with a third-party plugin from SearchWP, and it is their settings which are adding the ‘Clear Text’ option under the search field. You’ll need to reach out to their support team to request more information on customizing the search display.

If you’re interested, you could replace the SearchWP block with our WordPress Search block, which will have the same function but without the ‘Clear Text’ addition. There are also more options to customize how the block displays. We have a guide which you can reference here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/search-block/

So I just installed SearchWP as an alternative since I was using WordPress’s search engine and that was the one giving me issues. I’ve always used WordPress’s search engine as I’ve never had issues with it prior until recently. I decided to try a plugin instead as I wasn’t given many other alternatives to fix it as I tried all the other “tricks”. I am not CSS savvy so I wanted a quick solution that would make it more aesthetically pleasing in the meantime.

I even changed headers to see if starting over would fix it – which were themed based headers not one I created myself. Even the template themed headers were still having the same search engine issue of the “clear text”.

  • Could you tell me more about the issues you experienced with the default Search block?

Regarding the “clear text” issue with SearchWP, I recommend you reach out to the developers directly, since they are the best equipped to help you with their product. You can contact them here: https://searchwp.com/contact/
