Weebly to WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

I recently purchased a domain name through wordpress but when I went to purchase the Premium package, I got no indication that my payment details had gone through. The next time I logged onto wordpress my domain name came up as sarahbestdotorg.wordpress.com and not sarahbest.org as I wanted. I can see now that having read some other forum feedback that I may need to wait longer for this to change.
However, I also tried at the same time to purchase the domain name through weebly and was successful. So it looks like I may have the same domain name but with two different companies. I now want to delete my weebly account and use wordpress, but can I do this? I.e., delete the weebly account and still use sarahbest.org?
    Thanks in advance for help!

  • Hi there. It looks like you purchased the domain through Weebly instead of through WordPress. Unfortunately you can’t transfer that domain to WordPress, but you should be able to map the domain to WordPress.com to use with your WordPress.com blog.

If you did successfully purchase a premium plan the domain mapping should be included. Here are the instructions for setting up the domain mapping: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

I’ll tag this for staff so they can check whether a payment for the Premium plan did in fact go through or whether you still need to pay for a domain mapping upgrade. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

Thanks for your help – I’ll wait to see what they say.
    I was a little impatient I think!

    Hi there,

The Premium plan and domain registration you tried to purchase here at WordPress.com didn’t go through, so you don’t have any active upgrades here.

Since you registered the domain through Weebly, you can still map that domain to your WordPress.com if you’d like to use it here. If you’d like to purchase the Premium plan, you can do that from your Plans page and then map the domain for free.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Thanks for the help, I definitely want to get the wordpress premium plan. I am in the process of cancelling my account with weebly. Do I need to do this first and then map the domain into wordpress? Or should I map it first?

  • @sbesty
It depends what services you paid Weebly for. If you paid them for hosting as well as domain registration, you can cancel the hosting (if, of course, they allow that). But the domain registration will need to stay with them and you’ll need to keep paying them for your domain each year as you can’t transfer the domain itself to WordPress.com. In other words, you’ll need to pay Weebly for the domain registration and WordPress.com for the Premium bundle which includes the domain mapping (pointing your Weebly domain to a WordPress.com blog).

    Hi Sarah,

You’ll need to keep the domain registered at Weebly if you want to keep using it here at WordPress.com, so please don’t cancel the domain there. (If you cancel the domain, that gives up ownership of it and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get it back later.) If you keep the domain registered there, you can map it here at WordPress.com whenever you’re ready to use it here.
