is there a way to convert a weebly website to wordpress automatically?
the current host is IPage and I want to move away from them
the Weebly editor is through Ipage.
I was able to get a backup of the site but it is in tar.gz format.
any help is appreciated -
Hello @boatgirl3,
Moving a site from one platform to another can definitely feel daunting. You’re not alone there!
In general, there isn’t a reliable automatic way to convert a Weebly site to WordPress, including when the site was built using Weebly’s editor through a hosting provider like iPage. Your best option is to rebuild the site manually in WordPress by copying over text content and uploading images from the original site.
The .tar.gz backup you mentioned typically contains the site’s files, but it can’t be imported directly into WordPress in a usable way. It’s usually best treated as a reference for retrieving images or content rather than something that can be “restored” into WordPress.
Tip: It is often much easier to copy and paste your text directly from your live Weebly website while you have it open in another tab, rather than trying to find the text inside that backup file. So don’t delete the old site or point the domain to the new server until you have finished building out the new site
If you have a lot of blog posts, let us know – there might be a way to ‘import’ those via RSS to save you some manual work!
If you’re planning to move to a WordPress.com site, rebuilding the pages using the block editor is generally a good approach. If you’re planning to use a self-hosted WordPress.org site, the same general process applies.
If you’d like, let us know which type of WordPress site you’re moving to and we can point you to the most relevant next steps.
