Weekly banner ads

    I have a podcast that gets sponsorship. Part of the sponsorship includes a banner ad on the blog post where the podcast is posted. Does this violate the advertising policy. It’s only on the weekly blog posts where the podcasts are posted. I’ve removed the banners for now pending your response.

    We do have an advertising program called WordAds, which you can apply for at http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/

    Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed. For full details, please see:

    If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.

    Thanks for the quick reply Macmanx. I’m familiar with WordAds and the other sites. This was a unique case because technically the advertising is in my podcast. The banner on the blog post was something I added. I didn’t even put the two together until afterwards.

    Is there no way to have my own ads on a wp.com blog, other than a VIP site which I know I wouldn’t qualify for? Seems logical to me that if it’s worth it to WP to get $30/year to remove all ads (and by result all ad revenue) from a blog, why not charge $50 to $100/year to give wp.com users the option to put up their own? You’ll get more than the $30/year you currently get for someone to turn them off.

    No, that wouldn’t be possible on a WordPress.com site, as it would violate our terms of service and result in suspension.

    You don’t need VIP to run ads through. You could just install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on any hosting provider.

    I know about installing wp on my own blog. We have a few blogs that are wp installed. I just really, really like WP.com.

    I think the powers that be should consider my idea. Seems like a no-brainer to me as long as the ads don’t violate any content rules (e.g. lude, pornography, drugs, etc.)

    We have considered it before, but as no advertising is clearly outlined in our terms of service, any exception or advertising upgrade beyond the WordAds program will probably not be allowed.
