weird but simple situation?

This is a slightly weird situation, but:

I have a website hosted on wordpress (let’s say “example.wordpress.com”)
I own from before the domain “www.example.com”, currently hosted in a different server (hostgator)
Now I want to start using the domain “www.example.com” for “example.wordpress.com”
What’s the best way of going about this?

Seems to me the cheapest and more practical way would be to transfer all files from WP to hostgator, but I can’t figure out what do I need to do to achieve this. Should I somehow download all files from WP and just upload them to HostGator?
Or should I add my domain “www.example.com” to my WP account? (this makes me think I would have to keep both WP and HostGator as my servers, when in fact I could have it all in one?)

Thanks in advance for your time, insight, and comments!
