Weird followers
-
Thank you WordPress for the updates and the handling of the situation. Much appreciated.
-
I’m having the same problem, and have been for probably the last several weeks, if not months now.
-
I’m receiving these spam followers every day it seems.
Thank you Timethief. I’ll let you know how my blocking goes…
-
Unfortunately, not all the odd outlook emails show up on my list under People>Email. So I can’t get rid of them.
-
Same here. It’s been happening for weeks now. I’ll receive email updates, but it doesn’t show up in the app.. It started looking sketchy.
-
I have had the spam, but I am unsure as whether to remove incase some are genuine? What will be the harm of the non-genuine ones being there? I am new to this so your advise is appreciated

What will be the harm of the non-genuine ones being there?
Nothing, really. They won’t affect your site, and in fact some of them unfollow or are removed right away. I’d just ignore them for now.
But we just don’t want you to get notifications for new spam followers, so we are working on a fix.

We have got this problem of weird followers again. Site is https://omarkhayyamrubaiyat.wordpress.com/ . Are WordPress admin doing anything about this? It would be good to know.

Hi Sandra,
Yes, our developers are working to remove and block these spam followers. If they don’t appear in your followers list, it means they have already been removed.
-
I’m having the same problem with email followers with outlook addresses – all of them look like spam and I can’r find them anywhere on my site, just the notification comes through to my email address.
I would like it to be stopped.

Hi WordPress,
I am here because I have been getting the same thing, odd notices of Outlook email subscribers but nothing in my email followers list (so your fix is working lol). But I have a question…
Is it possible the intention is to mine WordPress for email addresses to sell on email lists? They subscribe, we post, they get new blog posts, but are they also getting email accounts attached to our blogs?
Just wondering.

This is super annoying here. I should have an option to turn the follow button completely off. It’s not serving a purpose besides for spam. I’m about to shut my site down. I have gotten over 50 emails of spam followers in the past two months.
-
ngoodrich, Why is it “super” annoying? So, you’re getting emails. Delete ’em. Or ignore ’em. So, you’re not actually getting followers – so what? What difference does it make?
I mean, yes it is annoying, but SUPER annoying? Come on. I think you’re overreacting just a smidge.
I think there IS an option, not to turn the follow button off, but to turn off notifications, so that you DON’T get an email everytime someone follows you, or “follows” you. Why not do that instead?
-
It’s been happening to me for the past few weeks, outlook followers with no page views. I’m confused about how they’re even following without viewing my homepage as this is where my email-follow widget is. Very strange.

Thanks folks. We’re working on a solution. For now, though, it’s true you can disable new follower email notifications if you’d like. That’s here:
https://wordpress.com/me/notifications
Click on your site, if needed, then you can adjust the notification settings for Site Follows.

I’m glad that wordpress is working on a solution. I paid for my site this year so would definitely like to see some tlc.
-
elishagabriel – Yep. We are working on this. There’s not any security risks to your account or sites. It’s simply more of an annoyance.
-
I have these – numbering close to 100 now. All from fake outlook.com addresses. What’s the point of this? Are they looking to legitimize these email addresses? Get me to follow back? Trying to understand the WHY behind this type of spam.

This has been going on for several months on one blog. I know WP is intercepting and deleting these spammers, but I get tired of getting many emails every day saying I have a new follower. UGH. I do not have this issue with my other blog.
Are there better firewalls on an upgraded blog vs a minimally registered blog?
http://www.arbitrarydustbunnies.com is getting these Outlook spammers (several per day)
http://www.kjscrimwriter.com is not (this is an upgraded account)Thanks for any answers you might have.
