Weird followers
-
So as far as I understand it, we’re all getting new followers, who are probably bots of some sort; they aren’t doing any noticeable harm and are in any case being removed by the good people at WordPress, so the only annoying element of the whole business is a few extra emails every day.
I think I can live with that.

Thanks for the tip on changing the notifications. I didn’t even think of that! DOY.
Wordpress is doing a great job at deleting all the bogus followers, and now I won’t get notified. My day just got a little better. :-)

Exactly, we’re sorry for the extra emails nonetheless, @bravenewmalden. We’ll keep trying to stop them.

I have had several notifications of followers who have odd outlook.com email addresses. However none have shown up as followers. Am I am missing something? I delete without opening them.

Hi, I couldn’t read all the comments, but just in case what I want to say wasn’t mentioned, I’m going to go ahead and explain my own experience with these notifications:
This is an example of notification: (email visible only to moderators and staff) is now following on (my webpage/blog address)
Of course when I go to check in the followers section as directed before, I find no new followers! All my followers are fairely old ones and those usually real people with normal e-mails and who have interacted with me before. These are not followers. They’re either spams or empty notifications. -
Since May 1, 2018 I’ve gotten 12 emails from WordPress showing spammy named Outlook accounts following my blog (6 today alone). 25 total since Jan 1.
None of the names appear when I look at the list of blog email subscribers within WordPress.
-
I too have received several of these just in the last week. I’ve only had my blog since Feb. 1. I will go ahead and delete them. Thanks for all the follow-up.

I am also getting the same thing. I get an email daily, about new followers all with outlook.com addresses. When I go to remove them in the email followers nothing is there. So weird! I don’t know how to stop the constant emails though. Any thoughts?

Hello,
Likewise, I have begun receiving numerous email followers (all outlook.com addresses). Yet, when I go to Admin to list email followers, they are not listed. Is WordPress removing them because they are fraudulent? Are they a security risk? Do I need to take action? Please advise…. -
WP is working on the solution to this. I followed someone’s suggestion to change my notifications to not receive an email whenever someone follows my blogs. I haven’t been bothered by this any longer. See previous posts for how to change your settings.

I haven’t seen this mentioned, but since we assume that these are robot spammers of some kind, why can’t WordPress just put in one of those “I am not a robot” checks when someone wants to subscribe to a blog? Is this so difficult?
-
I too, get several spam followers a day, but they don’t show up in my lists or push up the number of followers. Where do the spam followers go?
-
Same for me. I get the email notice, at least 3 outlook followers a day, but I cannot find them as followers at my site – they are not in email followers or other. :-(
-
-
I’ve had numerous followers in the past 4 months in the exact same fashion. However, none of them show up in my “e-mail followers” list. Where the heck are they?
-
I’ve gotten about 9 of these spam followers all from outlook emails too — follow me in the past week, but same as others, none of them show up in my followers.
-
-
Just checked – 17 in total from January to now :/ but as others have said, they don’t appear in my email followers or regular followers list….
-
As o 05-09-2018 this problem persists. No evidence of a follow in my states. Two or three (@)outlook.com followers per day.
I want to BLOCK these “email sign ups” before they crash my blog.
Update, please.
