Weird lack of stats

  • Unknown's avatar

On June 3, I received a comment to which I made a lengthy reply… Then, on the stats page, I looked through the titles of the posts that were visited on June 3… The post the commenter commented on was not listed… So, I checked the titles of the posts for June 2… That particular post is not listed anywhere between June 1 and June 4…

So, why is that post not listed in the stats?… What else might be incorrect?

Thank you for setting this straight because I feel this glitch might possibly affect other things in WP… Have a great day.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Readers may like your post without visiting your site, for example on the Reader. Since they didn’t actually visit your site, liking a post in this way does not count as a visit.

For more information on Stats, please refer the below support documentation.

    Thank you.

    Hi Mommyhive,

    Thank you for replying…

Added info: The post that received a comment was written in 2010, so it was not found in the Reader… Also, this person apparently does not have a blog of her own because her only contact was an email address… She simply wrote a comment without putting a like on the post…

There are so many variables and I thank you for coming up with some possibilities — but, sadly, they don’t seem to apply… : (

Let’s have a great day anyway and find the answer based on this added information…

  • Hi –

I’m happy to take a look at this. Can you send a link to the post where the comment was made? Thanks.

    Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for offering to look into this… I really appreciate it… The post I am referring to was posted October 25, 2010 and is entitled, “A Spirit of Divination”… When I went to it in the last couple days, the comment was there because I approved it and my reply was there…

But, my stats showing the titles of all the posts visited between June 1 and June 5 do not show that anyone visited that particular post… That’s very puzzling and makes me wonder if there might be some connection with all the outlook.com spam that is bugging WordPress bloggers… They might have found a way to break in… I say that because in this same time frame, I’m also having trouble seeing the whole list of my email followers… Supernovia can see all of them, but I can’t… It won’t scroll to the next page…

I sure do hope you are successful in finding out what is going on… Again, thank you for caring.

    Hi Liz,

I know that WP does not want to deal with multiple problems in the same possible context… It gets confusing… But, I feel that a number of strange stats might be connected to the outlook.com problem… I’m concerned about the above stats question that you are looking into for me — and also things like what I saw in my “Search Term” stats this morning… Please look at the “Search Terms” section of my stats for today (June 6) and see if you can see any possible connection because this seems to be getting more and more involved…

I could send you a PrintScreen of it, if I knew how.

Thank you for considering all possibilities… The Internet is getting more complex as times goes by… Have a great day… I’m glad you guys have the ability and tools to check into these things.

  • Hi @96isaiah, for this:

I could send you a PrintScreen of it, if I knew how.

You can upload to wordpress.com/media and update us here.

I’ll also be checking now to see if I see what you’re referring to, as well as checking on the earlier stat. Thanks!

    Hi Supernovia,

You’ve got your wish… I uploaded the PrintScreen and it shows at the top of my media files… How could such a search term land on my site — or anybody’s site?..

This seems just as improbable as having no record in the stats of anyone viewing my post of October 25, 2010 — and yet having a new comment on that old post that appears to be real… I have no clue what the commenter has seen on her end…

Maybe you can get a certificate for being a bona fide detective… : )

  • Hi there,

I did some testing, and stats on your site appears to be fine. I viewed that post in my browser, and it instantly recorded a stat for my view just now. If it didn’t record a view for that commenter, the most likely explanation is that they have some type of tracking-blocker add-on installed in their browser that prevents us from detecting that they’ve loaded your page. If that’s the case there’s nothing we can do from our end, and with the increased attention being given to online privacy lately, that’s likely to become more common.

But, I feel that a number of strange stats might be connected to the outlook.com problem

What other strange stats? There is no possible way the outlook spam could be connected to issues with stats, as subscriptions and stats are two completely separate systems. Stats depend on us being able to detect when someone loads your site in their browser – every time a page on your site loads, we load a bit of code that sends us a message once it’s loaded.

The only thing that can mess with that is if someone’s browser itself blocks that code from loading, and there are an increasing number of anti-tracking plugins that do exactly that, one of them being the very popular Ghostery add-on – I very specifically tested viewing that post on your site with Ghostery on and off, and confirmed it can block stats from being recorded.

and also things like what I saw in my “Search Term” stats this morning… Please look at the “Search Terms” section of my stats for today (June 6)

We have no control over what search terms bring people to your site or what is displayed for those in stats. What search terms bring people to your site depends on how search engines have indexed your site, and the search term data we display is what search engines send us.

We’ve asked our data team to check this is still working as it should, but most likely a particular search engine has sent scrambled data. This might even be intentional on the search engine’s part, as an attempt to protect the privacy of the person who searched – Google sends us almost no search terms at all any more for the same reason.

    Hi Kokkieh,

You are a good teacher!… Thank you very much for that plain and sensible explanation… And thank you all for testing things out to discover what I’ve experienced…

In my growing up years there wasn’t even any TV, but we did have a radio… Technology really changes things — even the hearts of people, considering all the spam and malware some try to foist upon others… It’s sad these days that everyone has to be so much more on guard with everything they do……. But, I feel so much better since you have been able to explain what you have found… And, I’m glad that my commenter made the proper steps to stay safe on the Internet…

I’d like to thank Liz and Supernovia also for their part in leading to this understanding… Great job, everyone!
