Weird little questionmarks appeared on our blog today
-
I have not been in to edit our blog site in several weeks, but today for whatever reason, there are little wing-ding questionmarks in diamond boxes all over the pages. Even the blog entries from 10 and 15 years ago have them on there. I tried talking with our webhosting folks, but they referred me to check in over here. Any help is greatly appreciated. I’ve already updated my version of Word Press and all my plug-ins have been updated as well. Thx, scheu

Howdy –
I’ll be glad to take a closer look. Please provide the site URL. I don’t see it mentioned in the post.

Same thing happened to me and it was because my 14 year old blog theme was no longer supported – I had to change to a newer theme

Hello Tom,
Many thanks!
So this is as @shelleyraedesigns says – the theme is quite old, and was last updated in 2015 https://en-gb.wordpress.org/themes/atahualpa/, so it’s likely that the encoding of the theme is no longer compatible.
As @shelleyraedesigns suggests, switching to a more up to date theme may be in your interest.
To note, themes at WordPress.com are automatically updated, and so it’s possible to use WordPress.com instead.
At a minimum to use a custom domain, the site at WordPress.com would just need the personal plan, and a domain can be connected as per these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/ or transferred as per these steps: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
If you have any plugins that would like to keep using, then the business plan would be required.
If you’re looking to retain content, this can be exported via the site via Tools > Export and imported the same way here at WordPress.com, via Tools > Import.
I hope this helps.

Thank you all so much for the info. I will look at updating the theme. I hate that, though; as I have always loved the layout of it. Again; I appreciate all the replys, guys. Thanks again and cheers!

@tomscheumann you could use the Health Check plugin to troubleshoot. That will let you confirm whether the theme is the problem, or whether it’s a plugin, or whether something went amok on your installation. Then you could contact the theme or plugin support, or contact your host about restoring a backup if needed. You would want to reach out in the forums for the free WordPress software if you need more troubleshooting help.
I hope that helps!
