weird looking domain

Hi – why is my domain coming up as ***************com.wordpress.com
No period, just ‘com’ included in the url. I could see .com.wordpress.com.
Seems weird – can anyone help?

  • Hi there,

If I had to guess, you typed “example.com” into the search box on the domains step when creating your site, but then selected to continue with a free address instead of registering the custom domain you searched for.

The free address is generated based on what you type in the search box, but as “example.com.wordpress.com” is a completely impossible URL on WordPress.com, it would create the site as “examplecom.wordpress.com” instead.

If you just wanted “example.wordpress.com”, you should have entered “example” only in the search field, rather than “example.com”.

Good news is you can change this free address whenever you want, provided the address you want is still available. Also note that address changes cannot be reversed, and the address you switch away from will be permanently removed and can never be used again.

Thank you!! I had already purchased a domain on godaddy and you’re right, I must’ve entered that in the wrong search box. Since you’ve been so helpful, can you explain how to go back so that I can use the purchased domain? I want to transfer my domain but before I do I need to delete 2 sites that are showing up in my account that are incorrect (due to my error.)

    Really appreciate your help.

  • There are two ways you can add a domain to an existing WordPress.com site:

Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

You will need a WordPress.com site to use the domain on, but you can delete any unwanted WordPress.com sites following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/delete-site/

    Thank you!

So before I complete the transaction, can you please confirm that this makes sense: First of all, I’m unable to transfer my domain until November 9, but can map it in the meantime.
If my website is ***************.com, and my wordpress cart shows it mapping over as ***************185730274.wordpress.com, does that seem right? In other words, when people log into my site it will take them over to wordpress – is that the address they will then view in the url? Or will it still show up as my original url?

    Thank you!

    Jen

  • If you map example.com to example185730274.wordpress.com visitors will be taken to example.com
