Weird occurance

Just looked at the reader and found the following message.

    Oops!

This is a private site. You’re following the site, but not currently a member. Please request membership to display these posts in Reader.

All nice but how am I suppose to know who’s blog this is about? So there is no way of knowing or how let alone know where I have to go to if I would like a membership.

And no in the list of blogs I follow I could not find any, if there was, with a private setting.

I have the same issue right now. Sad I don’t get to know whose blog it is.

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no means of personally identifying anyone who has a private blog. You clicked to follow and they will respond if they choose to allow you to.

Also take note that in order to assist you with any issue here you need to provide the relevant URL so please do that now.

  • @rantingcrow and @lucilleobscuris

If either of you still see this, will you send a screenshot of what you see? Just upload it to your media library (or to cloudup or dropbox, etc.) then send us a link. Thanks!

@timethief. there be no use in giving an URL. My reader is not yours.
And I know of a private blogs needing permission. But I have not followed new blogs since 3 days or so and none were private , I would have not been able to see them if they were.. It was just there upon first log in.

@supernovia. For some weird reason it has disappeared. But no other blog had shown in its place.

Where you usually would see a blog was now just the text as i wrote down. NOthing more.

I guess some things were being tinkered with and has been resolved. Or so I presume.

  • I’ll presume that too, since I wasn’t able to duplicate it. But if you see this again, grab a screenshot and we’ll take a look. Thanks!

@supernova. thank you fro the time. i do not think it is ever to be duplicated unless just maybe and this is an assumption a person was changing their settings.
That said since that will effect a lot of traffic I am sure you wordpress people have a certainty question.
I do however would like to add that if this can happen a simple email or notice to followers would help explain a sighting as I did. It gives a follower a change to also apply the private site. Or else we are left in the dark never knowing.

No need for explanation just that a site went private and if one still likes to follow click or here or something to apply. It gives the owner the choice to decline.

That all aside. I will if it ever happens again. Thank you for your time.

  • Thank you! While I don’t see us emailing followers if a site goes private (as some owners use privacy as a maintenance mode of sorts), we would definitely try to say which site is private or hide it in the reader. I hope that helps.

Owners have last say so they may have reason on why going private. But with so many followers or so many blogs we do follow a hint might help. To shows some understanding if you will.

I as an owner might first make a post announcing but not every post is read, one could be on vacation and notice later a blog went blanc.

As a reader I would understand without a given reason that the owner of a blog might be more selective with their readers and would respect that. But I like a chance to apply.

either way a small hint helps both sides.
A maintenance mode is nothing more than a sort of error/static page why would WP not be able to provide a simple one. Crazy Idea I know.
I use a hidden page or draft page myself for big changes.

    Again thank you for listening.

  • I understand.

What if when the site was made private, it simply did not appear in the feed?

  • Unknown's avatar

I understand fully if you leave it out. Though I could only talk for myself. As i may only follow a hundred something blog. I have a picture of most. I also recently went through them again and saw I know I need sorting. Won’t have to the time to keep up with more.

So if it would not show I still might have a clue on which one left. Though I can imagine most people do not even know or pay attention to who they follow.

Again I do not know what caused the glitch we saw. I checked the list and saw nothing missing. Presuming they would be taken of the list as well.

For confusion it might work what you suggest. But I can imagine if it was one of your favourites you would know one is missing. And how to track it down again?
I got my most favourites in my fav bar as well.

Bu I am not a design team I am a user. If I was in a design team I would make a lot more fuzz LOL but that is another matter.

I am merely suggesting and thinking out loud here after a occurrence that might have been a one time happening due to tinkering. As far as I know most private also use the mail to tell they posted.

In the end your suggestion might work for most to have no confusion what so ever.

  • That’s perfect, we appreciate you suggesting and thinking out loud. The decision is made here, sure, but we like to take feedback into account.

If you see this issues again, go ahead and get a screenshot, upload it, and contact us so we can look. Thanks!
