Weird sudden spike visitors from ‘European Union’
-
Hey! I have had a sudden spike in my statistics and a lot of visitors from a country that is called ‘European Union’ :) Real European countries is also listed so Im sure this is bots or something like that. It started on the 1st of December and give me about 50-60 hits around midnight every night. Is there something I can do to protect my website and get rid of these bots from my statistics? If anyone have any suggestions for me it would be much appreciated!!!!

Hi there,
For what site is this? You have several Jetpack-connected sites in your account.
Visits that are indicated as EU happen when we’re not able to determine the specific country a visitor is from. We determine people’s location based on the IP address they use when visiting your site, and with the EU those IPs are often regional, rather than specific to individual countries. So it’s completely normal to see visitors coming from the EU, rather than a specific country.
And spikes like you describe can happen. What most likely happened is that someone shared one of your posts on their Facebook or Twitter feed, leading to their friends/followers visiting your site.
But it is very unlikely that this traffic is coming from bots, as we don’t track “views” by bots in WordPress.com/Jetpack stats. A view is only recorded if someone loads your site in an active browser window, and that is not how bots view sites.
