Weird text rendering on Ubuntu Firefox combination
-
I have a blog to post one-liners in both Hindi and English in same post.
I just posted something, and some of the English text is being displayed as junk characters in Hindi. Link to the post is: http://lifeteaches.wordpress.com/2008/12/12/%e0%a4%85%e0%a4%ae%e0%a5%87%e0%a4%b0%e0%a4%bf%e0%a4%95%e0%a4%be-%e0%a4%95%e0%a5%80-%e0%a4%98%e0%a4%9f%e0%a4%a8%e0%a4%be%e0%a4%93%e0%a4%82-%e0%a4%95%e0%a5%80-%e0%a4%aa%e0%a4%b0%e0%a4%bf%e0%a4%ad/
Screenshots of the problem:
In opera+ubuntu, it looks fine, like this:

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9093/firefoxck0.pngNotice the “In America’ in the second line becomes transformed to junk characters. The characters are displaying correctly in all other browser/OS combos. All browsers on Mac and Windows xp display the same page perfectly fine.
The weirdest thing is, if I copy the “junk characters” and paste them somewhere else, they show up as “In America” – which is the correct text.
Any idea what’s going on?

Your site displays fine in Firefox 3.0.4 on Mac. Both screenshots you provide show the same lettering…
I think that Firefox is having an issue with the Ubuntu fonts. You might try re-caching your fonts, re-installing Firefox, or running a system check on Ubunut to see if there are any updates you need to do. If it is a common problem, I am sure someone has uploaded a bug fix to the Ubuntu debug site. They may have fixed it.
