Welcome page resutls in NOT FOUND

  • Unknown's avatar

When I visit my site main page https://blindersoff.wordpress.com it says NOT FOUND. I was trying to edit the opening page and accidentally deleted the default paragraph. Now can’t find a way to restore that page to be informational. Would appreciate any help that might be offered.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The front page https://blindersoff.wordpress.com/ is visible now. Are there still any unresolved issues?

Greetings Musicdoc. The reason the front page is working is because I finally decided to totally delete the Welcome page and replace it with another. But I never was able to “fix” the original page. It appeared permanently damaged and I could find no method to restore the text-greeting box that appears on a brand new account.

  • Hi there,

A Not Found error on the front page typically means you have the front page set to display your latest posts, but you don’t have any posts published. And at the time you posted this forum thread, you didn’t have any posts yet – the one post on your site was only published after that – so that would be the most likely explanation here.

You now have a static front page set, but if you switch your front page back to latest posts you should now see your one published post there instead.

Thanks. Ordinarily you’d be correct. But what happened was that I blundered a bit. There was a different front page there… and it had a text box in it welcoming people to the site. I was trying to edit that text box but accidentally deleted it. Then I could find no way to get the text box back, add a text box to that page, or alter the page in any form. All it gave me was a message “Site not found”.

You’re right, if I’d taken it from “static” to “latest” it would have shown the blog I’d already posted (and did) but that wasn’t what I was wanting there. What I wanted was a greetings page, as it was originally set up. From what I can tell, if one accidentally removes that greetings box, no way to restore it. (There might be and I just haven’t found it.)

Eventually I “solved” the problem by removing that page entirely and replacing it with another page.

The result I am wanting to achieve is an introduction page with a link to my blog pages (I like my blogs listed by subject and header rather than the entire blog shown, blog after blog.) I will perhaps figure it out sooner or later, but it’s not as intuitive as blog sites I’ve used in the past, so still getting used to it. : )

    Thanks for posting. Appreciated.

(I do say though, I like the “HTLM attributes” box they put at the end of these comment boxes. That’s a pretty helpful tidbit.)

Follow-up: in truth what would probably be ideal is if I could restore the entire site to “original condition” and start all over, but no idea if that’s possible.

  • It looks like you were able to get something restored there, I see an “About this Blog” page now.

    @blindersoff,

I finally decided to totally delete the Welcome page and replace it with another.

If you deleted it, then normally it can’t be restored. If you only sent it to trash less than 30 days ago, without deleting it, then it can be restored as described in the Restoring from Trash section of the Trash support page.

I was trying to edit the opening page and accidentally deleted the default paragraph. Now can’t find a way to restore that page to be informational.

Once a trashed page is restored (see above), previous versions of page can be found in revisions, and any revision may be restored. See the Restoring Revisions section of the Post and Page Revisions support page.

Thank you Music. I checked; oddly the page wasn’t in the Trash section, even though I trashed it. Seems if one messes with the original page, that change becomes permanent.

I’m sure I’ll be able to find a way to achieve the goal given enough time. Just a shame there’s no way to restore that original landing page.

  • Are you absolutely sure it’s not the Opening Our Eyes page currently in the Trash at https://blindersoff.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=trash&post_type=page ?

The timeline seems to match up.

Yup, absolutely sure. Opening our eyes was a duplicate of a blog page. The first page just vanished. Is okay though; decided to shut down the page for now until I learn a bit more about how WordPress works. Always a good idea to understand the system first. ;D

Thank all of you for your help. Very supportive community.

Closing this as “resolved”… at least for present needs.
