Welcome to WordPress pop-up.

This thing seems to pop up EVERY TIME that I try to edit a post on my site. In more than one web browser. No matter how I try to close it. It’s starting to get annoying.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

Can you tell us a bit more about the popup you are seeing? What is the exact text of what is says so we can look that up in our system?

Also can you confirm that you have not set up your browser to block cookies? We use a cookie to store the preference to hide most notifications we show, and if you block cookies it can prevent that popup from disappearing as intended.

I see you are using Chrome, you can check here to confirm that you are not blocking WordPress.com cookies, thanks.

Actually, no, I don’t use Chrome, and prefer to avoid it like the plague. I’ve experienced the relentless unable-to-disable popup phenomenon in Firefox, Opera, Amazon’s Silk and Microsoft’s Edge browsers.

I’d share a screenshot, but have lost all patience in trying to figure out an easiy way to do that in a WordPress forum. Apparently links to media files on an actual WordPress site doesn’t work. So I just shared it here instead…

Seems like the standard Welcome to WordPress pop-up. Is that because of an editor upgrade on your end? Because this blog has been around for years, hardly new.

  • Hi there,

Are you using Windows, by any chance, and also what version?

Also please check the following: click the three dots top-right in the editor and change a preference, e.g. enabling the Top Toolbar setting, or disabling the pre-publish checklist. Then close your browser, reopen, and visit the editor again. Are the changes you made to the editor preferences still visible, or have those reverted as well?

If you have access to another computer, can you check if the same thing happens there?

A recent change to the open source WordPress software made over on WordPress.org changed how editor preferences are saved. Since updating to that new version here on WordPress.com, we’ve had a handful of reports of people with this issue, but so far it’s only isolated cases, restricted to Windows, and to individual machines (i.e. the same account experiences the issue across browsers on one machine, but not on another).

At the moment we’re not sure yet what’s going on, so the more information you can provide about your environment, the better :)

Well, that opens up an interesting can of worms. Sure enough, settings/options on the menu aren’t retained either.

Tested with Opera, Edge, and Firefox on an Android tablet.

I know web apps are getting to be more and more of a compicated mess, but if the WordPress software is standards-compliant then the OS shouldn’t be an issue, should it? (Former software developer and bug chaser here).

I suppose I could crank out the old Chromebook or Linux box, but both are so dated they’re more likely to compound the problem. Neither would be a solution for me for regular editing. But I’ll dig ’em out if it would help testing.

  • Thanks for checking that.

So this is on Android? Can you share your Android version and the specific model tablet you’re using? Is it stock Android, or whatever skin the device manufacturer uses to “enhance” Android?

At this point we’re not really sure that it’s an OS issue – all the cases we’ve seen thus far seem to be restricted to Windows machines, but not all Windows users are affected. I’ve seen at least two cases where the same person had the issue on one Windows computer, but not another. Internally we’ve only had one person on our staff who has been able to replicate the issue thus far.

So Windows is the one common element, though it might not be the cause, and especially not if you encounter this on Android as well.

We haven’t had any reports of this on ChromeOS or Linux, and many of our staff use those operating systems, so no need to test on those, but thanks for the offer :)

Technically not an “Android”, but an Amazon Fire 10, 9th generation, with Google Play Store side-loaded.

Fire OS 7.3.2.3 … which is essentially Android 9.

  • Hi there,

Thank you for reporting this. We will relay that this has also surfaced via Android 9/Fire OS. We’ll have our developers look into this and will keep you updated once we hear any new information.

    Thank you!

Just out of curiosity, I tried editing on my phone running Android 11. If anything, the situation is WORSE. Now I’m getting the pop-up prompting me to install the WordPress APP, and it’s unresponsive and won’t come off the screen AT ALL. No editing possible.

Seriously considering switching everything to Joomla at this point.

The WordPress app is a pretty good editing experience (IMO), but I understand the frustration – I see the same problem in my post editor. But, our development team is working on finding a solution, so hopefully we’ll have this fixed soon.

Yes, and no. If all I were doing is adding simple text documents here and there, then sure, it’s convenient.

But when it comes to what I really want to do with WordPress, which is get fancier with embedded things, not just YouTube videos and Twitter status updates, but things like Amazon book previews… for those things the app isn’t just inconvenient, it’s completely impossible.

Which is what led me to uninstall the app completely. Why have it taking up space on my devices when I end up having to use the web-based version anyway to do what I really need?

I am sick of this pop up aswell. If I edit a post within minutes of the last edit, up it pops again. Every single time I go into “edit” it pops up. I have seen it hundreds of times now, and it is getting really annoying.

Here is the screenshot of the pop up that I am constantly getting (same as the OP)…Screenshot

  • Hey @incogtala,

Thanks for your report as well. Can you tell us what operating system and device you’re using? Just so that we do continue to notify the original poster, can you create a new thread with that information

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

Feel free to add the modlook tag to the thread so staff can respond immediately. We’ll add this to our internal report.

    Thanks!
