What "account on my own WordPress installation but not on WordPress.com" means?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
In the statement below, I don’t know what means with “It’s possible for you to have an account on your own WordPress installation but not on WordPress.com/Gravatar.”

I think I can even have account on WordPress.com/Gravatar.

Have a site that runs WordPress, but isn’t hosted on WordPress.com?
The WordPress platform is free, open source software that you can install on any server. It does not share account information with WordPress.com.

It’s possible for you to have an account on your own WordPress installation but not on WordPress.com/Gravatar. An easy way to tell if you have a WordPress.com account is to try and reset your password using your email address instead of a username. If you have a WordPress.com account, you will receive a confirmation email and can proceed to use that account.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Automattic Inc. https://automattic.com/ owns both wordpress.COM and Gravatar.com. A wordpress.com account is a gravatar account. They are together forever http://blog.gravatar.com/2013/04/03/gravatar-and-wordpress-com-together-forever/

    Thanks a lot,
I am now not going to achieve anything, but I am confused with what means with “It’s possible for you to have an account on your own WordPress installation but not on WordPress.com/Gravatar.”

I think I can even have account on WordPress.com/Gravatar.
Also, what differences are there between account on my own WordPress installation, on WordPress.com”? I think the different only is that WordPress installation is my own property, however, WordPress.com is not my own property. Though, I still need a 3-rd hosting service to host my own WordPress installation.

Have you read this support doc? https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ It may provide some clarity for you.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks a lot,
I’ve scanned that doc, and I came across this
You must register for an account on WordPress.com and abide by our Terms of Service. No registration with WordPress.org is required.

So, what does that mean? I think with both I need to register an account, or otherwise from what website/server I can log in my own WordPress.org account (i.e. how to have an account without need to registering it)

  • Unknown's avatar

You said before”Automattic Inc. https://automattic.com/ owns both wordpress.COM and Gravatar.com. A wordpress.com account is a gravatar account. They are together forever http://blog.gravatar.com/2013/04/03/gravatar-and-wordpress-com-together-forever/”

However, My questions are:(could you please address them in order)

1-Why can I add more than one e-mail addresses(email addition) in to my Gravatar account? (Look in the screen shot whose link is below, you’ll see that I now have two e-mail addresses, xxx.hotmail.com, which is primary, and xxx.yahoo.com, which is a secondary.) Whenever I add an e-mail, then I get [Gravatar] Verify email addition.
    Gravatar e-mails

2- I don’t see any benefits from adding an addition email as long as I can only log in to both of my Gravatar account and wordpress.COM with the primary e-mail address

3- I have read Gravatar is a part of the WordPress.com network. But, Why do I need to sing in to Gravatar only with WordPress.com account, and why not sing in to Gravatar with other site/service accounts as long as Gravatar provides a central place for you to manage your avatars and profile information across a wide variety of sites and applications(Gravatar allows you to manage all of your online identities in one place on the web)?

4-Why does Gravatar not have its own separate profile account?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have to add, to repost my posts needed to be edited since there is no ‘edit message’ option in your forum.

You said before”Automattic Inc. https://automattic.com/ owns both wordpress.COM and Gravatar.com. A wordpress.com account is a gravatar account. They are together forever http://blog.gravatar.com/2013/04/03/gravatar-and-wordpress-com-together-forever/”

3- I think adding more than one e-mails in Gravatar profile/Wordpress profile would be beneficial i letting any service that uses Gravatar for avatars pull them in as soon as you sign up as long as the service is associated with the same e-mail added in the Gravatar profile.(The profile avatar of Gravatar.com be used/pulled in the profile image of service)

4- I know Gravatar provides a central place for you to manage your avatars and profile information across a wide variety of sites and applications, not just WordPress.com. So, do you know a list of sites using Gravatar.com for their profile images.
    I only know these:::
    *Wordpress.com
    *ZumoDrive.com
    *edurila.com

    Thanks a lot,
But let me state my final points in order to be in one post. So, the staff would not need to read thru all my thread.

7-Why does Gravatar not have its own separate profile account?

  • Hi there,

The reason you have to sign in to Gravatar using your WordPress.com username and password is because a Gravatar account and a WordPress.com account is the same thing. There is no way to separate them.

Yes, you can add additional email addresses and profile pictures to your Gravatar account, and those pictures will be used when you log into other services that use Gravatar with those email addresses, but you merely manage those emails and images from within your Gravatar account. They don’t become alternative logins for your Gravatar account.

WordPress.org is software. It’s not a hosting platform. If you set up a WordPress.org site, you will have a username and password to log into that site. That is set by you in the site’s database. That site is not connected to the WordPress.com platform, and it’s not connected to Gravatar.

The only WordPress.org account that exists is the one you need to register if you want to post in the WordPress.org forums. That is also not connected to WordPress.com or Gravatar, and you won’t be able to use it to log into any site you created using the WordPress.org software.

I am not aware of any list of websites that integrate with Gravatar.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks a lot,

I hope these would be my final questions, and I hope you will take some of your precious time out to address them.

1- Then do you think all Gravatar profile-based websites(integrated with Gravatar) will only pull the avatar of Gravatar/WordPress profile to their profiles as their avatars as soon as I signed up. I really see that only avatar of Gravatar was pulled by other sites/apps use Gravatar for avatars.

2- I only know a website(such as, WordPress.com, ZumoDrive.com, edurila.com) is integrated with Gravatar if the avatar is pulled in its profile images as soon as I signed up account with using one of the e-mails added in my Gravatar profile(WordPress profile), These I am aware with, but I have singed up in other service with using an e-mail added in my Gravatar profile. However, I didn’t see that avatars was pulled in their profile images.
So, how to know if a website is integrated with Gravatar or not.

You said “If you set up a WordPress.org site, you will have a username and password to log into that site. That is set by you in the site’s database.
The only WordPress.org account that exists is the one you need to register if you want to post in the WordPress.org forums. That is also not connected to WordPress.com or Gravatar, and you won’t be able to use it to log into any site you created using the WordPress.org software”

    My questions are:::
1- I only know WordPress.com forums, at which I created a separate account from the account of my WordPress.com website? However, I don’t know there is a WordPress.org forums. Which account can I use to get logged into WordPress.org forums?

2- Can I use the username and PW(account) created while setting up my WordPress.org site(while installing WordPress.org software into my hosting service?

3- I think that sitting up my WordPress.org site will need me first to rent a hosting service to install the WordPress.org software into?

4- You said that “The only WordPress.org account that exists is the one you need to register if you want to post in the WordPress.org forums”. However, I read (No registration with WordPress.org is required) in this support doc below https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ , “You must register for an account on WordPress.com and abide by our Terms of Service. No registration with WordPress.org is required.”

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support forums. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

This step by step guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

    Thanks a lot,

Could you please address these points below in order to finish this matter?

1- AS long as any site use Gravatar for avatars pulls them as soon as I signed up using an e-mails added in the Gravatar profile, then if I added an e-mail to my Gravatar profile, and that e-mail was signed up in other sites that integrate with Gravatar. Do you think the previous avatar will changed by the Gravatar image?

  • 1.

Do you think the previous avatar will changed by the Gravatar image?

It should, but that really depends on how the other site fetches information from Gravatar. We cannot force another site to update the image if you change it on Gravatar.

    2. Again, that depends on those sites. Your Gravatar profile only contains the data. We can’t control how other sites use it.

    3.

So, how to know if a website is integrated with Gravatar or not.

There is no way to know unless that website says they integrate with Gravatar.

    4. Yes, you can have a WordPress.org account without having a self-hosted website. But I don’t know why you would want one. Unless you plan to contribute to the WordPress.org forums, there is really no reason for you to have an account there.

    5. No, you can’t. You can use the same username and password if you want, but it’s a completely different account, and you’ll have to register there first to create that account. It’s not like Gravatar where you have a “Log in with WordPress.com” option.

    6. That is correct. You will need your own domain and a hosting account to have a self-hosted WordPress site, and unlike WordPress.com, it won’t be free and it won’t include tech support.

    7.

I think even with WordPress.org, I will need to register(create) an account while installing WordPress.org software in hosting service.

No, you don’t need a WordPress.org account to use WordPress.org. You only need an account if you want to post in those forums.
