What approach to start building a site like this

I need to present content in a very similar way to http://www.tnvacation.com/ Of special interest is the calendar page. Already found a great WP calendar plugin.
I need to have multiple pages with links on the home page, user login, ability to post with calendar dates and allow replies etc …
Q: Where do I start. Should I build it around a WP theme or build an XHTML/CSS site and reserve WP theme for the claendar and post page.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

We don’t use plugins here at wordpress.com so if you need them, you need to be at http://wordpress.org/support
From the things you need from a site it does sound as if self-hosting would be your best bet.

I meant to say widgets…. My question is for more experienced developers.
From what I have seen, WP sites can look almost identical to a custom site. Would it be possible to approach something similar with a WP theme and if so can you recommend one that is close in functionality and form? Or, is it better just to start from scratch?

That’s a very attractive site. CSS editing, coupled with one of the two Sandbox themes, can achieve wonderful, truly custom results. See the information and links here:

That said, the underlying function of a theme can not be altered on wordpress.com, nor can blogs at .com be used for commercial purposes. Certain things, such as javascript, are stripped out for security reasons, as we are a multi-user platform. So with all that in mind, .com might be perfect for you ..or you might need a self-hosted blog with free software from http://wordpress.org
