What are all the factors to registering my domain for $18?
-
I’d like to consider registering my site for $18, but I would like to know what I would end up giving up in privacy and what the requirements are. What info do I need to provide and what do I need to make public?

Here’s the relevant quote from this page:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/When you register a domain name, you have two options: public or private registration.
If you choose to register a domain publicly, your name, email, and address automatically become available to anyone, anywhere, including spammers, marketers, and other people who you might not want to share your information with.
With private registration, you can set up a new domain name without making any of your contact information public, and still enjoy all the benefits of regular domain name registration. It’s like being listed in the phone book: You can either have your number and address published, or you can pay to be unlisted.
All WordPress.com plans include a free domain credit with optional privacy protection. Privacy Protection for additional domains is a paid upgrade that costs $8.00 per year per domain registration.

I’m a bit confused. If I want private (and indeed I do!) Do I have to come up with a different name and everything?
$8 for additional domains? I only want and need one, thanks.By the way, thanks for looking at my humble site. :)

@aronsmithe
A .com domain costs $18. But all domain registrars have to get detailed contact info from people who buy domains, and that contact info gets added to a public database anyone can access. The contact info is a requirement of ICANN, the organisation that regulates all domain names on the web.
But we offer private registration at an additional fee of $8 where we hide your information from the public database by substituting it with our own. So if you want private registration included the domain costs $26 in total.
Let me know if you have any more questions about this.

Yes, I also found out that it really cost $100 plus $26. I would not mind paying the $26, but it is not worth $100 for my site.
I’m better off keeping it the way it is, it’s actually more secure and I won’t have to deal with trolls, hackers, defacers, etc.
If people don’t like the long name with wordpress.blog. this and that then hard cheese. I’m not trying to win a popularity contest, just offer up factual info and have a bit of fun. Serious, but not too serious. -

No, the Premium Plan costs $99 which includes a domain with private registration, so if you want to buy Premium you don’t have to pay for a domain as well. But in your case you should also still be able to buy the domain on its own as your account was created before we changed how this works. However, this might change going forward.
But if you’re happy with the free address that’s fine as well :)

Hi Kokkieh,
Oh, so if I understand you correctly, your saying I can possibly register my current domain with privacy option for $26 without having to purchase a premium plan? -
Also, if that is the case is there a special thing I need to do or would it be automatic when I click the button or what have you?
-
That is correct. Go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and type in the domain you want. Then select the Buy Now link next to the specific domain.
If you can still register the domain on its own, that will take you through the rest of the domain registration process. If not, it will prompt you to buy the Premium Plan.
-
Thank you. One other question. As it is a annual thing, if it let’s me register without having to purchase a premium plan, will I be able to renew the registration without having to purchase a plan?
-
I also notice that when I click to “register for $18” link or button it takes me to a screen that prompts me to type in a domain name, but there are also two buttons with the domain name I want already (my current one) with a choice of .me or .com. Do I just click on the one I want (.com in this case) or do I still type in the name?
I’m assuming that after that I will be given the choice of selecting “private”. (By the way, by private, I hope it means very private). -

That I can’t guarantee. As I said before, the option to own a domain on its own might change in future. Nothing has been finalised, though, so I can only tell you how it works right now.
I will point out that if this should change and you don’t want to convert to a plan, the domain is still your property and you can transfer it away from us to a different registrar and web host at that time.
Do I just click on the one I want (.com in this case) or do I still type in the name?
Type the name you want, and then it and some other option will be listed. Pick the one you want. After you register the domain you’ll get the option to add private registration.
Private registration hides your personal details completely. You can see this link for the whois data of one of my own domains with privacy enabled:
https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=hkwp20150918.comYou will see it doesn’t even list my name under the contact information, even though I provided that along with all other required contact details when I registered the domain through our system.

Thank you very much for your help Kokkieh.
As for having to move my domain in future, that’s not going to happen. I would not know the first thing about how to do that. It would probably cost a fortune and besides, if I did do that I would not be able to administer my site or would have to learn code or a whole different system. Yeah, no thank you. I’d rather shut the whole thing down at that point. I’m not doing what I do to make money or gain popularity. Money would help a lot, but I have no interest or desire to have a business or get involved in tax problems or whatever. Even though it’s allowed and all, I’m even scared of being an affiliate and whatnot. (I may do it if offered someday as long as I am well educated in what it means and such, otherwise, no thanks and I don’t see that happening anytime soon). So if it comes to pass that I would have to purchase expensive plans, I’ll just revert back to what I have now. At that point it won’t matter what the address to my site is except for having to do new cards, but that’s no big deal.
