what are incoming links?

I just noticed today I have an incoming link on my blog stats page. It has the name of a poem (written by me) that I had posted. When I click on the name of the poem, it takes me to a blog (not a wordpress blog) that has the first few lines of the poem and a link back to my blog. I think. Anyway, is this bad? I feel a little funny about someone taking my poem and posting it somewhere else without my permission.

    Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

It’s probably a blog scraper, which is an illegal business that steals content and posts it on blogs so that the owner makes money from the ads displayed with it. But without seeing it, it’s hard to tell. Some people maybe just liked your poem and wanted to quote it, and that’s considered fair use and they don’t need your permission so long as it’s only a snippet, not the whole thing.

Incoming links is taken from Google Blogsearch and lists places your blog is referenced throughout the blogosphere.

I believe, though am not 100% sure, that it includes places that just use your name, not places that link directly to you. At least, it picks up my comments on Gawker blogs, although they don’t link to my blog.

Thanks. The site that I followed the incoming link to did cite my name as the author and only quoted a few lines of the poem.

Regarding the blog scraper. Is there anything one can to avoid having content stolen?

Also, I forgot to mention that the other site has my wordpress address posted so I guess people can click on it and get to my blog for the rest of the post (poem).

If you don’t mind, I still have was wondering about the second part of my question. (Of course no hurry! I appreciate all your help!)

You can set your blog to private, never use tags or categories, and don’t link to anyone else, ever, including in a blogroll. But I don’t think you should allow criminals to dictate your behavior: I encourage you to contact the ad company and ask them to pull the account if you see your blog’s content swiped. All ad companies forbid that kind of behavior.

Is it bad? Without seeing the other blog, it’s impossible for me to guess whether this was legitimate quotation or just blog scraping, so I couldn’t speculate.

I don’t see any ads anywhere on the incoming link site. By the way, its name is:
01001 Things To Do Before You Die.
Have you ever heard of it?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, never heard of it. But I looked it up: that is a blog scraper, designed to draw attention to that orange button in the sidebar; that is effectively an ad. If I were you, I’d contact them and insist they take down your material; if they don’t supply contact info, try contacting Blogspot directly and ask THEM to take it down. It’s got zero original content.

Thanks alot, I’ll do that. I appreciate your help. If you’d like, I’ll log back into forums after and let you know the outcome.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure. If they’re stealing from you, they’re undoubtably stealing from a lot of other WP bloggers.

Thanks for your help. I’m signing off now.

I have the same problem with this website: http://www.blinkbits.com/ i don’t know if it’s a blog scraper or just simply posting my article. How can I tell? Also, the site doesn’t post my whole post, just an excerpt (one where I was quoting someone else also), and there is a place where you can click to “read more”, which when clicked, brings you back directly to my blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

If it has original content talking about what you posted, it’s probably real. This does NOT include “Cindy had an interesting post today over at someblogoranother.com” followed by your post. That’s all automated, and that’s indicative of unlawful use. There are a number of websites that allow people to snippet other people’s posts and link back to their blogs, kind of like a brain-dead Digg, and it’s up to you whether or not you allow that.

  • Unknown's avatar

Blinkbits looks to be one of those, so it’s up to you whether you leave it up or ask them to take it down. I personally don’t like those sites, but it’s your call.

I have noticed the same thing. I posted about the Eastern Caribbean cruise I am going on and had an Incoming Link that took me to http://cruises.mystudenttrip.com/2008/02/27/eastern-caribbean-vacation. All around the page are ads about cruises, the Princess Cruises and discount cruises etc. – google ads and all kinds of other stories. Something else I’ve written is at Great Albums. Annoying..

  • Unknown's avatar

I meant to say my article about the cruise that has an incoming link from the site I mentioned in my previous post reads that ” Rona Kobell wrote an interesting post”.. and I’m not Rona Kobell!

Someone just stole my entire post, photo and all, and posted it on their garbage site here:
    http://healthcentershop.info/2008/04/01/breakfast-crepes/
The site has a bunch of pharmaceutical garbage on it – who should I contact about having my content removed from there? I can’t even decipher ownership, advertisers, who to contact, etc – that site’s a mess. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My blog isn’t even a month old so I’m completely new at this. This aspect of blogging is very disheartening.

  • Unknown's avatar

Omg you can say mess again…… its all filled with ads and there is no way to contact… (that I can see)…. (look at all that crap at the bottom tho, makes me want to throw up!!)

It looks like its a wordpress blog (almost) but maybe it’s hosted on a different place (and using a wordpress theme)

And that blog is filled with other people’s content… Maybe there is some way of finding out the server, and then asking them to close the site down… but I dont know how…
