What are incoming links?
-
Yes I am a n00b and yes I have looked through the FAQS and I can’t find some basic information on the function of incoming links…..any help would be appreciated :)
-
Can you tell us what you DO understand about incoming links, so we dont’ repeat ourselves?
-
All I know is that it’s possible for another blogger to link to your site.
I don’t understand how or why this happens.
Just some basic information on what incoming links are and how they work would be great, thanks!

I think this is a legitimate question at this point and time. I used to only see incoming links if someone linked to my blog or a post I had written directly in one of their posts. They had something to say about me or my thoughts. This was quite helpful! (Other times a fake blog will use my entry as one of its own and credit it to another author. This is annoying, but I like to know that my RSS feed is being misused anyway.)
Since yesterday, I occassionally go into my blog stats and see links to any blog that has my blog listed on their sidebar as a blog that the author reads. I even had an incoming link from a blog I had never read before, I couldn’t find my blog listed anywhere on that blog (not even in possibly related posts); however, the blog entry was on a topic I have written about in the past.
I just checked and at the moment my incoming links are displaying the right (old) way. So, are the incoming links function being redefined?
-
I’m kinda hazy about this too, because some people have linked me and I don’t see anything in my incoming links. And then today I got one, but when I clicked to that page, there wasn’t anything linking to my site. Enlightenment from some kind, knowledgeable soul please?

Sometimes it takes a while for them to show up in the list, but basically they show links to your blog or to a specific post on your blog that another blogger has inserted in a post of her own. They don’t include links from blogrolls, afaik.

Incoming links are working on one of my blogs but not on the other – even though I know of at least one blog post that has linked to it. That was a few weeks ago now, but still no links appear on the dashboard.
I registered a while ago to put my blog manually on Google Blog search and yet still nothing.
Any clues as to why?

I too have had only a few incoming links on my blog but now they are gone. ? Are they suppose to stay listed or disappear.
-
Incoming links have been experiencing some problems lately. I had a ton of them just show up today when they’d been missing. Staff must be tweaking something.
-
The Incoming links bit uses Google i.e. a search for link:http://{blogname}.tld/ on http://blogsearch.google.com
Basically this returns a list of blogs that Google knows link to your blog. But Google limits the data that they include in this search. If you are interested in finding out more about who links to you then either use Technorati (easy but not great) or sign up to Google Webmaster Tools (more complex but with heaps of data).
Hope that helps.

Hi Derivadow – that helps. Though couldn’t verify blog on GWT, at least not in wordpress.com
-
-
@whattowearwhere – yes you can, all you need to do is select the option to verify by uploading a file – Google then gives you a code; in WP create a page with the title = the Google code; get Google to verify your blog. You can then delete the page.

Ah yes, I did that but only got as far as seeing the weird google code page on site and immediately deleted it – ie, pre-verification. Will try again. thanks.
