what are menu locations?

  I have no idea where newly created menus appear.

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there,

  I see you are using the AltoFocus theme. You can check its page here:

  https://wordpress.com/theme/altofocus

  That theme can display menus in 2 places. There is a Top menu and Social menu.
  When creating a new menu, you need to click the checkbox of a location where you want your menu to appear.

  In your Customizer go to Menus and pick the menu you want to use. Under Menu Locations click the appropriate checkbox and click Publish button.
