What are my options for changing content width on a free plan?
-
On individual post pages I’d like to widen the content area (for desktop the date and share/like options are placed on the left side, squeezing the content into the middle) and for the home page I’d like to change excerpt lengths. From googling it seems like there are fairly simple CSS solutions, but the problem is that since I’m using a free plan I can’t input CSS. Are there other options, like in a custom HTML box, for example? Thanks.

The only alternative is to purchase either a Business Plan or Premium plan so you can edit the CSS. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Note 1: If you have the required upgrade you can use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can create a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need with CSS editing.
Note 2: You can also post there prior to purchasing an upgrade to get an answer to whether or not what you want to do can be accomplished via CSS editing.
