Portfolio projects are specifically designed for people to showcase samples of their work, in your case, your photography. You create a number of portfolio projects, say, one containing landscapes, one for portraits, one for macro photography, etc. Then you use a theme that showcases the projects on the home page. That way, when someone lands on your site they immediately see a broad sample of your work. http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/
I do see you have a self-hosted site. The info I gave above applies to WordPress.com sites and I don’t know if you can have the same functionality on a self-hosted site. They might be able to give you more information on the WordPress.org support forums: http://wordpress.org/support/

Thanks Kokkieh. Sounds like since I use Galleries to display my work that Portfolios might be redundant. Again thanks for your time.
