  What is the benefit to having my own domain name and using the free blog?

  Hi pollockjc,

  One of the big benefits of having your own domain name is that if you ever happen to out grow the WordPress.com site. Maybe you need custom features for your site eventually that they don’t provide, you could move your site to a self hosted version of WordPress and still keep your same address.

  With your own domain name you could also get an email provider or use the email forwarding and have email addresses setup at your custom domain.

  Those are a couple of examples, hope they help.
