What are the free features on wordpress.com?

After reading all the positive reviews about wordpress, I decided to give it a try. As I am a beginner I wanna go for the free version first, and I must admit, that I did not expect to spend HOURS researching the most basic things, i.e. how to change the font type and size, how to use css, or looking for the ‘plugin tab’ and so on. It is very frustrating so far..

I am pretty close to pick another host, so I wanted to give it a last try if anyone can tell me if there is a good overview of free features that are available on wordpress.com.
Beginner tutorials start immediately talking about plugin tabs, and so on, and how to enter a css text.. What about explaining FIRST how to even get those tabs before I start looking and looking in vain for those on my admin page?!

So, do you really need to be a premium member even for these very basic things such as changing the font or entering a css text??

    thanks

Beginner tutorials start immediately talking about plugin tabs

They don’t apply to WordPress.COM free hosted blogs. They are only for WordPress>ORG installs.

The only relevant tutorial for free hosted WordPress.COM bloggers linked to on the bottom of your Admin page http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

    Thanks for the links.
So basically is it true, that although you can create a blog on wordpress for free, you will be ‘forced’ to spend at least money on the custom design to begin with?
Picking a free theme without even having any control at all on the font (size & type) of the title – which is the main thing of a blog/website – it really makes me wonder if wordpress blogging can be considered to be free..
