What are the FTP credentials for installing updates?
-
I have just setup my first WordPress website. I knew nothing about it before. Now I just logged in as the admin for the first time. Yeah!
It says please update to newer versions. I click it, it asks for FTP credentials. What are they? Are they credentials to access my own WordPress website? What are they? Who would have created them? When I setup WordPress I did not specify any FTP credentials.

BTW I installed this WordPress on my Microsoft Windows Server 2016 IIS server. It is an EC2 instance in AWS. I have never setup any FTP on this server.

Hi there,
On what site are you working? The account you’re using to post here does not own any sites on WordPress.com and was created only minutes before you posted to this thread.
This tells me you’re using the open source version of WordPress, found on WordPress.org. Support for that version of WordPress is provided over at https://wordpress.org/support/
That said, for FTP credentials you need to contact your hosting provider – FTP is the system you use to access your site’s files on your hosting provider’s servers, and your hosting provider provides you with the credentials you use for that access:

I’m not sure how FTP works if you’re running your own server, though. The users in the WordPress.org forums should be in a better position to advise you on that.
