You may have social icons included in your theme header or a search bar. These can be removed by going into the editor and adjusting the homepage template.
Just click on the page element you want to remove and select the delete option. In your Menu settings, you can also move the social icons to the footer or a sider bar if your theme includes one.

They’re not “social icons” — Here’s a screen shot. I recognize that these are functional elements of the WordPress software. But when I try to see what the finished site looks like, they’re still there. Do I need to “log out” to see the site as it will be seen by others? And the original question still remains. What does each of them do?

Oh, that’s just your navigation bar.
Anyone logged in will have their own bar across the top. If someone does not have a WordPress account, they will just see a white bar that invites them to make their own site.

My Sites will display all of your blogs, Reader will take you to the Discover page to read other people’s blogs, Write is a hot button to start a new post, then you have your Profile/Account button, and the Bell is your notifications.
The Write button will have the text “Write” on it if you are using a desktop browser, on mobile, you just get the ink Quill icon.
