What are these things appearing in Comments?
-
The “comments” admin section of my blog has a bunch of things pending approval that are not comments. They’re one-line random excerpts from the blog post itself, written by me (the only author on the blog).
When I approve them, they don’t appear on the blog as a comment. I’ve ended up trashing them all but I’m just curious what they are.
An example of exactly what they look like (the 4th line “excerpt” in each case seems to always include a link to another blog post):

HI there,
Those are called pingbacks.
Whenever someone else links to a post on your site inside a post on their own site, that generates a notification on your site, with a link back to the post referencing your post. You then have the option to display that pingback on your post, potentially sending traffic back to the person who linked to you.
The ones you’ve deleted recently are self-pings: pingbacks also happen when you link from one post on your site to another. In other words, you write a new post, and in that post you include a link to a post you published previously. That will generate a pingback on the old post, linking back to the new post.
It’s completely up to you whether you want to display them or not.
You can find more info on pingbacks, including how to also disable them, here:

From a site owner standpoint, I use self-pings in order to leave a link trail to a newer post/update on the same topic. Updating old posts to include new content doesn’t ping subscribers or search engines.
Hope that also helps.
