What can I customize without purchasing upgrade?

I’m interested in basic customization on the free themes, but don’t want to purchase the $30 upgrade. All the free themes I’ve clicked on allow the option to change the background image, but wordpress.com doesn’t allow that simple customization to go live unless I pay $30, is that correct?
It seems maybe a banner change is the only free customization upon the free themes?
If this is untrue, and I’m missing some customization opportunities without purchasing the upgrade, I would love to be made aware of these. So far I’m disappointed with wordpress.com, and am considering going back to blogger. I understand it’s free, but being unable to change something as basic as the color seems an absurd limitation to me.

the only customizations that require the $30 purchase are the ones under the “custom design” tab. If your theme allows changing the color of your background, or theme colors, or the arrangement of your content under any other tab (see links under “Appearance”) those changes are all free.

changes are theme dependent, many themes allow the changing of background colors, header images, background images.
You need to look under the different options under
Dashboard >> Appearance

Your understanding is not correct. If it’s visible under Theme Options then you can do it for free. That includes uploading background images, etc, depending on the individual theme you choose.

Awesome. Thank you everyone for your help. I was very discouraged, I guess I got confused and blinded by the customize toolbar that comes up on the side asking for money.
