What defines a portfolio?

What’s the difference between a portfolio and categories of posts?

That’s a good question! I would say that portfolios might be classified as a specific type of category, as they function quite similarly once they are active. The main difference is simply that they are operate in different spaces, and portfolios are meant to showcase particular types of work (photography, paintings, poetry, etc.), whereas categories and tags are more for traditional blogposts, but for many, I’m sure the divide is kind of fuzzy.

Making the most of your portfolio

  • Hi there,

Asking what’s the difference between a portfolio and a category is like asking what’s the difference between vegetables and the color green. They’re not at all the same thing, so you can’t compare them.

A category is a piece of meta-data you add to a regular WordPress post or to a portfolio project in order to organise content on your site according to specific topics.

A portfolio project is a completely different type of content on your site from posts and pages. Portfolio projects have their own separate feed, don’t appear in the main posts feed for the site, and subscribers to your site don’t get notified when you publish a new portfolio project.

Portfolio projects are meant to showcase your work, for example, an artist or photographer portfolio that you can show to potential clients in order to market your services to them.

So to return to the comparison I started with, if blog posts are fruit, then portfolio projects are vegetables, then the color green is a category you can use to sort either of those.

Let me know if you have any other questions about this.
