What do I do to reinstate missing Icons?

  • Unknown's avatar

In my pages and editing winows the icons for all the tools, like links, bold, etc. are replaced by vertial boxes with numbers in them. I have restarted, cleared cookies and cache, but they still appear. One also appears on the home page between New Post and my photo.

    Howdy Barbara,

Hmm, that is odd. I’m not able to reproduce this in my browser.

Can you confirm which browser and browser version you’re using?

Also, could you make a screenshot so we can see what you’re seeing? You can upload it to your Media Library, then copy and paste the link here. Read more about creating a screenshot here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

I’m happy to look into this further once we have a bit more information. Thank you!

    Cheers,
    Caroline

    Hi Barbara,

Thanks for sending that along, that’s very helpful. I’ve tried logging in under your user account, and I’m still seeing the proper icons in Firefox 21.

I know you’ve tried clearing cache and cookies, so that’s a great first step. Can you try more of the troubleshooting techniques listed here and report back?

I’m especially curious if you experience the same problem in a different browser, like Chrome or Safari — this will tell us if it’s an issue with Firefox, specifically, or a larger issue with your computer.

Thanks for your patience while we figure this out!

    Cheers,
    Caroline

Someone responded to my thread and said she was having the same problem with Firefox, but not with google or Chrome. She said it happend with the new look in WordPress. I still have the issue in Firefox, but not in Safari, so it looks to be a Firefox issue. I’ll just open in Safari and let your team figure it out. I would love to know what you find out, though.
    Thanks much.

    Howdy Barbara,

Thanks, that does narrow it down! I’ll look into this and keep you posted.

    Howdy Barbara!

Another user in a different thread experienced the same problem, and found the solution. I was able to reproduce (and fix) the issue on my end after going through these steps, so I wanted to see if this works for you, too.

It’s probably due to a specific Firefox fonts setting. When in Firefox, go to:

    Firefox -> Preferences -> Content -> Fonts & Colors -> Advanced…

Then check the “Allow pages to choose their own fonts” box.

Let me know if you have any luck with it.

    Cheers,
    Caroline

That did the trick. Is there a way for WordPress to program (a normal font) things differently so a million users don’t have to bother you? I’m guessing so, since it was not a problem before. Just a thought.
    I appreciate your help! Thanks.

    Howdy Barbara,

Happy to help! Thankfully we haven’t received too many requests like this, and the solution is simple enough. Thanks for your feedback.

    Cheers,
    Caroline
