what do I need for building my own wordpress theme?

Im very new to WordPress, also learning HTML/XHTML/CSS.
I have ExpressionWeb and pretty solid with Gimp. I cant afford Photoshop. But Im wanting to build my own theme.
My blog will be multi topics, Computer Tech, How-To Cooking and my Personal artwork(non-digital). Will have lots of pics and text, that’s both.

The only thing we can do here is work with the CSS when we buy the paid CSS upgrade. Since this is a multi-user platform where we all share the underlying theme and wordpress files, we do not have access to the theme files.
Secondly, all wordpress themes are written in PHP script, not HTML, and PHP script is a whole new level of complexity. You have to be very versed in all of the security issues involved or you can easily create holes that crackers (no they are not called hackers) can use to get into your site.

If you want to try building your own theme, then you would have to self-host a blog at a third-party hosting service such as godaddy, blue host, etc.
