What do I need to know about more tags in Structure by Organic Themes?

  When I try to follow the directions from the “help” section on “more tags” I can’t seem to get them to work.

  I can insert a “more tag” in the right place, and it will isolate the writing previous to the insertion on my home page as it is supposed to, but it does not say anything like ” read more” and when I try to customized it by adding a space after the “<!–more” and typing in “Read more…” as follows
  “<!–more Read more…–>” it still does not display the text “Read more…”

  What do I need to do?

  This is actually intentional. The theme is designed to automatically display excerpts only, without the need for the More tag.

  So…is it possible to control where the excerpt ends and still have a “read more” message?

  Or am I stuck with a 55 word excerpt?

  You can add the “More Tag” wherever you would like by clicking on the “Insert More Tag” button in your Editor. Structure simply has a 55 word maximum in displaying posts on the front page.

  Well, when I try using the “more tag”, I can control where the excerpt breaks off…but no text appears saying “read more”.

  This is especially confusing to my readers since any post that I do not use the more tag on does say “read more”

  To make matters worse, the posts that I do not use the more tag on cut off mid sentence and so it is obvious that the reader is only seeing the excerpt.

  But the posts where I control the length of the excerpt by placing a “more tag” cut off at an obvious stopping point ( like after a quote) and then do not say “read more” , which makes it look like it is just a really short post.

  So, I am thinking I probably need to change themes…but I really like the way my blog looks with Structure, I just wish I had more control over the length of the excerpt. I am fine with no longer than 55 words, but I would like the option of less that 55 words and still telling my reads “read more” .

  Is that possible?

  I see what you’re referring to after testing out the “More Tag” in my own blog. Unfortunately, users are currently unable to modify this setting in Structure.

  I have suggested including this feature in any subsequent upgrades to this theme. However, I cannot provide a timeline as to when, or if, this change will be made.

  Thanks for the information. At least now I know it is not just a situation where there is a way to do it and I just don’t have the technical skill to do so.

  I will work with the theme as it is, and if I get too frustrated I have found a couple other themes I could try.
