What do I need to upgrade to in order to be allowed to have affiliate banners?

What do I need to be allowed to do affiliate programs? I cannot find any decent or trustworthy answers about what needs to happen in order to be able to use affiliate banners. Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

Affiliate banners are not allowed on WordPress.com as they conflict with our No Advertising policy.

Affiliate links are generally allowed—if you review a book, for example, an affiliate link to the book on Amazon is okay.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Thanks!

    Hi,

    We know that.

Do we have to completely leave WordPress or do people use WordPress.org if they want to participate in affiliate programs? Is there any way we can upgrade to something, or do we just need to leave wordpress completely?

If we have to leave completely, is there a way to keep our blog as is, but get out of WordPress? Thanks!

One more thing, what about if we review another product that is not on Amazon, can we link the product on a website? What about eBay? If we write a review on a product, can we also link to the product on eBay?

    Thanks again.

  • Hi,

I used Amazon as an example, but you can link to products on eBay or other sites, even with affiliate links. The issue is we don’t allow the banner advertising aspect of affiliate marketing. We did recently loosen our affiliate link policy, as previously we allowed no affiliate links, then only Amazon.com for a time, now links from our sources.

You can use WordPress.org with any amount of advertising or affiliate usage you’d like. There are no restrictions in how you can use the software, for any purpose.

As you may know, WordPress.org is self-hosted software, meaning you have to have an hosting account somewhere to run it on. We do have a few options listed at http://get.wp.com/hosting/ (more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org can be found at
    WordPress.com and WordPress.org )

For moving it from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, you can do-it-yourself, which would require exporting/importing the content, installing and setting up your theme, setting up the customizations again. We have a quick guide on how to export/import content at Moving a Blog.

Alternatively, we offer a Guided Transfer upgrade that will migrate your site to your own hosting account on one of the four providers mentioned at http://get.wp.com/hosting/ More details about GT can be found at http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/guided-transfer/

Hope that helps. If you need anything else or have any questions, please do let me know. Cheers!

One more thing, sorry. We want to stay with WordPress.com but we are having real problems trying to put up an affiliate link on just one post. There are lots of youtube videos out there, but none of the ones we have tried work. Does WordPress have instructions to put a link on one single post so that we can work with something that is reliable? Thank you for your time.

Ooops. I think I finally understand what I am allowed to do. I can have a non-banner affiliate link in articles which are reviews to products, no banners allowed ever. Really sorry for bothering you again. I think I’m straight on the answer now. Thanks.

  • No bother at all. That sums it up!

This is a relatively new policy shift, so older tutorials or answers will likely contradict this. If anything becomes confusing or need anything else, please do let me know. Cheers!
