what does alt t do?

1) There is a function in the editor window which says “Split post with More tag (alt+t)”
can anyone explain to me what this means?
2) Does anyone know how I can choose to password protect only certain portions of my post, but not all of it?

1 – If you have the Visual editor on, it does what icon 13 does:
