What does "following" a tag do? How do you undo it?

On the tags page when you click on a topic, there is a “follow” button on top. If you click it, does that mean you are all of a sudden following thousands of blogs with that tag? If so, how do you undo that? The page didn’t stop loading, so I exited out but I’m afraid of what might have happened.
