What does it take to have my blog post displayed in the Reader?
-
I have tagged my post, “genealogy” AND assigned the “Genealogy” category to it. Is this not enough to have my posts appear in the “Genealogy” (or any other) category? I came here with the same problem a few weeks ago; and my post quickly appeared in the feed with no explanation. What I want to know is what causes a post to appear in the feed so I can make I do what it takes without having to inquire in the forum each time. Thank you.

Every post you publish automatically appears in your RSS feed URL for posts https://daughterofslaveancestry.wordpress.com/feed/
Your issue is that you are inadvertently tag spamming AKA spamdexing.
On your latest post https://daughterofslaveancestry.wordpress.com/2015/05/04/in-remembrance-of-violet-marie-palmer/ you assigned this block of categories and tags:
This entry was posted in Genealogy, Obituaries and tagged 1933 Adams, Cresswell’s Funeral Home, Fern Oaks Cemetery, Gary Indiana, genealogy, Lake County Public Library, Mrs. Lila Allen, Obituary, PALMER, Rev. Charles Palmer, St Paul Baptist Church, The Gary Post Tribune, Violet PALMER by Miss Donna. As you have assigned a combined total that exceeds 15 Categories/Tags to your posts, you need to edit and delete. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/ After removal of the excess categories and/or tags note it may take several days for your posts to begin displaying there.
You are inadvertently spamdexing AKA tag spamming. And, you ought to be more concerned about your posts not appearing and being well ranked on Google and Bing SERPS (search results pages) than not appearing on the WordPress.com Topics pages because it’s search engines that send a significant flow of traffic to blogs and they can choose to bury your content where the sun don’t shine for that.
The rule of thumb is to assign to your posts the least, not the most, combined number of only relevant categories and tags that accurately describe the individual post content.

I truly apologize. Will an Admin please delete the following posts? I finally got it right at 2:55. Sorry and thanks.

@timethief
I recall reading about the 15 item limit; but I didn’t realize it was for a combined total. I thought it was only for tags. And I can see that I got carried away with tagging on this one.Thank you so much for getting me on the right track. I still have quite a bit of reading to do. But after reading the “Quick Blog Post Tagging Tips,” I’m inclined to delete the post, rather than edit the categories and tags, and repost it using more stringent application. What’s your advice?
Also, before I get off into the reading, does, “Less is More” mean I should use no more than 1 category and 2 tags for a post?
I really appreciate your explaining the process. Thanks again.

No. Do not get into that bad habit that I see others doing just to get therir posts published in the Reader and on Facebook.
Purge your mind of that thinking now as it will bite you in the butt SEO wise if you hold onto it. Always avoid creating 404 (page not found) errors in search engines.
Edit the post and reduce the categories and tags.
To use the classic editor when you edit posts,
go the Posts -> All Posts menu, hover over the post title and click the Edit link. Then click Update when you are done. -
Done. I deleted the unnecessary categories and tags. I’m learning; so I have to ask. Would it be feasible for me to do the same for older posts at this point?

So, @timethief, since I’ve cleaned up my categories and tags, will my SEO rankings improve? When should I expect to see an improvement? Thanks.

It will take time (probably weeks) but do understand that it is the popularity of your posts and the number of backlinks they each receive that helps determine where the posts will be displayed in the SERPs search engine page results. You need to aim to produce content that other bloggers will backlink to in new posts of their own on their blogs and promote ion social networks.

May I please draw your attention to posts I have published that I think will be helpful?
Get rid of the *’s on your Page titles in your menu. Avoid Special Character Use in All Titles and Tags http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/21/avoid-special-character-use-in-titles-and-tags/
Your About page is empty and that’s not a good thing. Your About page is to be used for the purpose of posting a brief biography as well as a blog description.

http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/06/17/creating-an-effective-blog-description/Creating an About page is a way to introduce yourself to new visitors and let visitors know what kind of content to expect to read in your blog. That page gives visitors context for the information found elsewhere on the site as it focuses on providing information About the blogger (who you are) and About the blog (what the purpose of the blog is).
The best guide for the Twenty Eleven theme is here . The Twenty Eleven theme will display a Site Title and Tagline but you don’t have one due to the choice you made not to display header text here > Dashboard > Appearance > Header. I would not make that choice. https://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/
The site title tag is the most important tag in your site. An effective site title tag, blog title and tagline are branding messages that define who the blog is for and what’s in it for them. That’s why the site title tag is among the most important ranking factors in the search engines ranking algorithms.

This is some great information that I will delve into within a couple of hours. But, is there a way to display the Site Title and Tagline even though I’m using a custom heading? I thought I had to choose one or the other. Thanks.
-
You can use a header image and still have the header text display.
http://daughterofslaveancestry.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-headerEnable this setting:
Header Text
__ Show header text with your image.
click “save changes” -
Okay, I understand. I’ll have to either get used to the redundancy or remove the title from my custom graphic. I’ve been thinking about updating it anyway. I also added text to my “About” page. It was blank because I was using it as a page to link to “About Me” and “About My Header.”
These are really great tips. You have definitely steered me onto the right track. Many thanks.
