What does mapping mean?

    Hey there! How are you??

Running out of time on the WiFi so I’ll be quick.

    Already have a website: benjamingregor.com

But I’m thinking of going back to WordPress, I like the options of it, and I’ve seen blogs I like that have their own website like ‘abrokenbackpack.com’ that still has WordPress associated with it. I realised this when I subscribed to the blog, as it confirmed something via WordPress.

Basically, what does it mean if I ‘map’ my website here on WordPress?

Also, it said I could do it for $13, but then at the checkout it said $43, what’s that about? I went further to see if it would tell me more information about what ‘mapping’ is. Does this mean I have to scrap my website or does it redirect from my old website to WordPress? I don’t understand at all, so I’m asking :)

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Kindest regards,

    Benjamin Gregor

Wait – what? Ask the public forums? What about an actual person from fucking WordPress? Jesus Christ..

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well I don’t work for WordPress but I might be able to clear a few things up – I will think about it

Thank you. If you could clear things up, I’d be very grateful!

domain mapping should be $13.-/yr – not a clue why the $43.- thing

Domain mapping is a way for you to have a plain blog here at WordPress.COM (your-site.wordpress.com) – but when people visit they will see benjamingregor.com and not benjamingregor.wordpress.com. – your existing site looks like a plain html site so you would probably need to copy and paste the text and upload the pictures into your site first here –

THEN to the domain mapping – having access to the old site is good for the copy and paste – much easier – I have moved a couple of sites and having access to the existing site is good

The site linked to my name is domain mapped if you want to see how it works

The above should get your started a bit

    Good luck

PS – most of the help comes from your fellow bloggers stopping by to help a bit – if there are problems we can’t help with we flag things for the staff to help – either way the record here for help is pretty good

    http://abrokenbackpack.com/ – is a WordPress.ORG install

For more on the difference: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

See above for the differences – the big one is you can’t sell your own ads here (many people think they can get rich with no traffic and a lot of ads – just does not work)

The base blog benjamingregor.wordpress.com. if “free” – in return for the “free” WordPress.COM puts some small ads on your site from time to time. Some people find that ok others not – I pay to have the ads removed from one of my sites but the other sites and some friends site we just accept the small amount of family friendly ads –

    Wow, thank you so much!

Okay.. so I understand: mapping means that I’ll have ‘benjamingregor.com’ displayed, not benjamingregor.wordpress.com.

But I’d still have a plain blog here, not a premium one.. so I’d be paying for my benjamingregor.com, plus mapping, and then probably upgrading. Damn, maybe I should have started with WordPress to begin with..

Or maybe I should just improve my current website? Maybe I don’t need WordPress?

Basically, I really like the comment section of WordPress, that anyone can comment, they don’t have to have Facebook or anything. I can’t find a way to add that function to my current blog, I’m new to all of this. My friend suggested Namecheap and once I bought the domain, he just set up the website for me using ‘Ghost’… – Do you know any way of adding that to my blog? Also http://abrokenbackpack.com had a subscribe thing, and it sent you an email asking you to confirm your subscription, which I found very professional. But is that only limited to WordPress? Could I do that with mine?

Sorry, all these questions! I’m totally new to all of this, I really want to learn.

Thanks for the difference between .com and .org! It seems like .com means WordPress take care of a lot for you, and .org means you have to do it all, but have more freedom and autonomy.

And this whole ‘get rich with no traffic and a lot of ads..’ and that it doesn’t work – I don’t know if I fully understand what this means yet, but I’d like to learn more. What does work? Hahaha I know nothing!

Okay.. so I understand: mapping means that I’ll have ‘benjamingregor.com’ displayed, not benjamingregor.wordpress.com.

    Yes

WordPress take care of a lot for you, and .org means you have to do it all, but have more freedom and autonomy.

    Exactly

Part of the reason I moved was to have the staff here take care of all the upgrades and security and such

You can move here for $13.-/yr plus the cost of your domain registration wherever that is at (you can’t transfer the registration here so you need to keep the registration somewhere else)

The ads get rich – some people show up here and want to sell their own ads on a site that has maybe 100 page views in a good week and they expect to make a ton of money – just won’t happen

The fancy $99.-/yr package has the domain mapping, no ads, CSS upgrade and others – the CSS is if you want to change the look of your site (but not functions)

The subscribe function is built in here – there is a subscribe by email Widget – you just drag and drop it to the sidebar or somewhere people can click on it – anyone can then subscribe –

WordPress (either .ORG or .COM) searches better than a plain html site if you use good practices

Comments are built in with a super spam filter called Akismet that does a great job

Adding content here is like glorified word-processing – yes some learning curve but the basics are not that bad and the two links I gave you above should get you in the right direction

Why not make a Post or two on your blog here and see how you like it??

Also there are around 200+ free themes to choose from so you should be able to find one you like

Upgrades.. what kind of upgrades would they do?

Moving sounds like it has benefits.. but if I can do all of it myself on my website, I’d rather not pay more than I already am.

I don’t have much money at the moment, so I can’t go for the fancy package :( plus, I don’t take blogging very seriously (yet!) despite my writing abilities, I’m having too much fun enjoying life, but all my friends tell me I could make something out of it. Who knows!

Most important bit: Ahh, is there no way of adding a similar comment section to my website?

Adding content here is easy, I remember all the basic HTML from MySpace back in the day haha. I did post a few things, but then I moved to blogger/blogspot.. I can’t even remember why, I’m sure I had my reasons.

here is an outline of the plans: https://store.wordpress.com/plans/

You could move for as little as $13.-/yr plus your domain registration

If you have email with benjamingregor.com – then it is a bit more involved – there are several ways to do email some cost some don’t – email forwarding is built into domain mapping – the reply would show your regular email address –

You would not have any other hosting costs, so you could cancel your current hosting package – I kept my email with my old host so the savings to me was not as much as it could have been

Comments are built into all Pages & Posts here so it is easy for people to leave comments on your site – no special code required at all. Another option is to have a Post or Page for general comments – that is what I have done also.

There is a contact form that is also built in so people can send you messages through your site without your needing to have your email address on the web, so you have some privacy

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you, or anyone else, please find me the script/code I would need to copy and paste for a comment section like on WordPress?

I know you said there’s no special code on here, but I’d really like the same commenting system on my website.

  • Unknown's avatar

The commenting section is built into the WordPress software so there are no code sections we can pass on

Since your site is a plain html site I don’t have a clue even where to look, my last host had a commenting thing that was built in but it was easy for spammers to get around anything I was able to do, so I ended up deleting the comment section and sending everyone to a Post on my WordPress.ORG install
