What does the number on the Facebook button on my posts mean ?

    Hi there
    I have added a ‘post to Facebook’ button on my blog that appears at the end of each post (not the official Facebook button). There is a number that appears in a blue circle on it once I have published my posts. I’m a bit confused as to what the number represents. Is it the number of times the blog post has been shared to Facebook ? because it doesn’t match the number of shares listed in the ‘Shares’ section of WPAdmin. Or does it represent the number of referrals to the blog FROM Facebook ?

    This is a really great question! In the middle of this document it talks how the share number will be different than on your stats page, but not why.

    Fortunately, at the very bottom in Troubleshooting of that document it reads: What does the Facebook share count actually calculate? According to Facebook, if you’re using the official Facebook share button, the count includes:
    -the number of likes of your post’s URL
    -the number of shares of your URL (includes copy/pasting a link back to Facebook)
    -the number of likes and comments on stories on Facebook about your URL

    The social network share counts on the icons record only shares that are made from your posts on your own site. WordPress.COM does not have access to the number of shares made on the social networking sites
