what domain names are possible ?
-
Hi,
I am going to buy the addition to remove the “wordpress-word” from the URL so that my blog’s address becomes http://www.ecureuilaulaboratoire.com.However, can I choose to have a country-specific domain-suffix instead… such as .se ? Or is it only .com that is available when hosting my blog with WP.com?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can have some, but not all country suffixes. Note that they will generally be less user-friendly than a .com .net or .org address. Ask staff to ensure your desired suffix is allowed http://support.wordpress.com/contact

I mean when people try to remember how to get to your site, they’ll type in Whatever.com and then Whatever.org and then Whatever.net and then Whatever.ca and Whatever.co.uk and so on, and it’ll take them ages to remember that your site is Whatever.xyz

I think that depends on how anglo-saxon you are… :)
In Sweden, the .se suffix is still going strong as a default… -
Ya, ya, and I live in Canada where people continually try to tell me that .ca is The Next Big Thing. It’s not.
I have no horse in this race; it doesn’t matter to me what you register. I’m just telling you, from the benefit of my experience, how it is.

ecureuilaulaboratoire,
I agree with you that a country specific domain is no less user-friendly than a generic .com or whatever domain. I am a European, but I do have a .com domain myself; that is because when I first registered my domain no country TLDs were available for private persons, only for registered companies. However, today I would have chosen my country domain. If .com really were more user-friendly there would be no need for country TLDs. I don’t think it matters. Besides, it’s also a way to create your web presence and uniquely identify you as coming from that country. It really depends on what audience you cater for, but I am very much in favour of using country TLDs instead of generic domains.
That said, why link a French title with a Swedish TLD? ekorrenilabben.se sounds better to me…
