What Exactly is WordPress ?

I’ve been reading for over an hour, and I’m a retired top level Network Engineer, plus I’ve hand coded my own websites, but I still cannot figure out exactly what WordPress is.

    My best guess is;

    • did I ask for a dot instead of a dash here ??? If I type a dash i want a dash.
    • It appears to me, that WP is a sort of AI half-system, which incorporates a graphic editor instead of a text editor like Brief, and WP has a compiler which takes graphic input, and a little text the designer is allowed, and creates a website, which might be hosted on wordpress.com, it seems like a cluster to me. What does WP exactly do or not ? I also suspect that WP incorporates a lot of outside attchments like to google and amazon and ebay and facebook, etc, although the designer may not want it.
    • I would rather use a lower level editor, so I can add ‘credit card code’ or ‘username login code’ rather than WP, which seems to do all things in a mediorce fashion. Most people don’t know, or care, what the resulting code is, but some do.
    • I don’t want any connections to google, unless I ask for them. I don’t want any facebook connections, nor twitter, or any of that.

Is there any way to use WP for this ?

Maybe it’s because I know too much about websites and coding, but WP (and this site itself) has got to be the WORST example of AI and coding I’ve ever seen. I can’t even go back to the WP homepage (if there is such a thing). And when I click on build a free site to see what is there, there are NO actual website homepages. All they are is a page that might be 5 levels deep after a user selects what they want to see. And, when I want to quit and go back to the start (of what I don’t know) there is NO way to quit and go back. lol You’ve got to be kidding. Maybe WP is designed for folks who know absolutely nothing about anything. They don’t even know what a website homepage looks like. Who designed WP anyways ?

WordPress is free software that enables non-computer scientists to build websites they can host anywhere and can install any of millions of plugins developed by others to enhance their sites.

WordPress.com is a host that uses a modified version of the wordpress software to enable people to build websites in minutes rather than days/weeks of building them from scratch.

WordPress.com is one of many CMS’es or Content Management System. Perhaps you could take a start by understanding a CMS. Once taken that step, you could compare the available CMS’es and see which CMS fits your needs.

The time of self-coded html-sites has passed long time ago.

Can I use WP to add these plugins to my own code ?

If I were to use WP, to create a page/site, can I view the output of WP code ?

Why are these lines double spaced ? More AI that doesn’t work. Why is there no selection even within a (this) simple blog for line spacing ?

WP seems to try and do all the thinking, so much so that it makes no sense, so a person doesn’t even have a choice of a homepage. I looked at all the homepages, and they aren’t home pages, but different looks for the same thing, a picture, a few words here and there, no Titles, no Selections to take a user to another page, no drop downs that I can see. This is almost like going to Walmart’s children’s game section, it is just so simple it’s a wonder why it’s used at all.

I have to disagree wrt to hand coding, it’s just that it’s not cheap. Look at CL though. Is that simplicity ! The only thing I want to do is create something like CL with a login. I don’t know how to add a backend db. Look at facebook, twitter, instagram, ebay, any site that’s actually trying to do something, is hand coded. I have 20+ websites at home running, all hand coded.

Maybe what I need is something between WP and hand coding, so I can add code modules to my own code.

As the wordpress software is free why not try it (although that would have to be elsewhere not here at the host WordPress.com which is a place designed for people who DON’T want to code).

Why not…for one, the free ‘cookie cutter pages’ they call websites, are almost void of what my idea of a website’s homepage is.

It appears to me, that what WP is, is a very simple tool to create a web PAGE, not a web SITE, on somebody else’s (WP in this case) website. And what this means is there is no Menu-ing whatsoever, no drop downs, no categorization, no organization of information. WP seems to be a way for someone to create a web PAGE (again) with a pretty picture (as long as it appears in the same place as where WP form-pages describe) and a little text, so that a person can display a picture of a product or their dog, on the Net. It appears to me, the WP output is so simple and un-functional, that it almost redefines the phrase entry-level.

CL is a webSITE. It does exactly what it needs to do and not more. It’s my fav example of what a site should be, and how it should work.

Another thing that’s happened to webSITES in the past 10 years, is that because of dumbphones, webSITES have become designed for phones only. In other words, there is no HomePAGE anymore, but a HomeBOOK. There is no categorization, no organization whatsoever. Just stick it all on one page and let them scroll. Who cares ? No one will notice as “the children don’t know what a website used to be anyways”.

I wonder, is there a ‘compiler’ or website editor, where I can take my own HomePAGE, add functions, like Payment code, then add Test Taking code, then add Last Page code, then add Link To Advertising code ? Then after it adds all the desired code, I could go thru it and add or remove what I don’t want.

If some company had THIS, it would be PERFECT way to code a real website !
