What exactly will it mean to transfer my domain over to my wordpress blog?
-
Hi there
I paid for a domain mapping service at $ 13.00
Now, being a bit of a luddite, I am completely lost as to what this is actually about. The current story is:
my domain, davidpointon.com, is hosted by Anchor.net.au
my emails currently route through gmailMeantime, I have built a new blog at davidpointon.wordpress.com
If I follow through with the domain mapping, what does that mean in terms of
– whether I still need Anchor.net.au to host
– what will happen to my emails to this domain
– what happens in future if I have any domain related issues.. eg. what is the technical support service you provide if you end up hosting my domain?Sorry about my confusion on these basic matters.
Cheers

Hi David,
Welcome to WordPress.com!
my domain, davidpointon.com, is hosted by Anchor.net.au
Right now, Anchor.net.au actually provides you with two services.
First, they are your domain registrar. That means they are the company you buy the rights to your domain name (davidpointon.com) from every year.
They are also currently your web host. That means they own the server where the files for your current website, the one you can access with your domain right now, live.
If I follow through with the domain mapping, what does that mean in terms of
– whether I still need Anchor.net.au to hostYou would no longer need Anchor.net.au to host your files, but they would still be your domain registrar.
what will happen to my emails to this domain
If you get e-mail already at (email visible only to moderators and staff) you can continue to do so. There are some setting changes we’ll have to make, but it’s absolutely possible and we’ll be here to help.

We don’t accept domain transfers so if you move your site to WordPress.com servers you will still have a relationship with Anchor.net.au. As your domain registrar you will pay them for your domain renewal each year and you will have to work with them to point your domain to the WordPress.com name servers.
Other than that the day-to-day work on your site content will happen in your WordPress.com account. We provide full technical support for that site in a variety of ways. You can read more about your options here:
While we won’t have access to your Anchor.net.au account, you are welcome to come here to ask all of your website questions. We’ll answer the ones we can, and let you know which ones need to go to your registrar. We’ll also let you know exactly what you need to ask your registrar so you get a helpful answer.
Let me know if any of that was confusing or if you have more questions. We are always happy to help!

Great stuff Lizthefair, that is nicely explained, and gives me confidence. Thanks.. so I’ll go ahead in getting Anchor to load up the new DNS records then.
You have lived up to your role as Happiness Engineer. Cheers

Oh, one question more Liz. Re the changes needed for me to receive emails, I hope to not miss out on any emails.
What is the timing and sequence of the changes you will make? Can they be done so that my emails are uninterupted.I have just instructed Anchor to change the DNS records and this could therefore happen anytime in the next few hours
Cheers

I’m seeing MX records (that’s what you need to get the e-mail to work) set up in your account already. Did you solve this on your own?
I’m also seeing that your domain davidpointon.com is redirecting to http://davidpointon.com/About_Me.html. Do you have something set up with Anchor to cause that redirect? If so, it needs to be removed before visitors can use davidpointon.com to get to your new WordPress site.
Once we have those two things sorted, we’ll set davidpointon.com as your primary domain and you’ll be all set.
