What happened to “draft”?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can save a post as “private” and I guess no one else can see it, but what happened to draft? Private means it shows up on my own view of the blog, and that’s not what I want to see. The posts I had saved as drafts are still there as such, but I can’t find out how to save posts I am working on as draft copies only.

I’ve been saving them as “unpublished”.

Yes, but it still shows up on my own view of the blog, which is disconcerting to me. Plus, I want to see the way the alpha page looks to the people who check out my blog.

Does anyone know…is draft like spellcheck: currently unavailable but coming back soon?

As far as I know (meaning, I did once), when you click “Save” it’s being “published” but not as part of the other posts and not seen by your readers. On your dashboard it’s in the “Drafts” section. Also, when you write a post it’s being automatically saved once in awhile.
I’m not a long-time WordPress blogger, so maybe someone else will know better.

    I meant “did it once”.

You used to be able to save a post as a draft. This means it was not visible when you viewed your own blog. You had to go to the Manage Posts dashboard and filter out the posts saved as drafts. That was the only way to see them.

But now you save as unpublished and check the “keep private” box, but the post is there when you view your own blog. It’s distracting. Draft was better. ***I hope it’s coming back.*** It was easier to have different posts in various stages of development. And you didn’t have to worry about forgetting to check a box and having a post get published before it was finished.

“Publish” and “Save” are too close for comfort. Tipsy bloggers could easily click the wrong button.

I may be misunderstanding exactly what you’re talking about…but here’s my ‘take’ on it:

When you click Write (post or page) there are two options when you’re done – Save and Publish. I personally took the Save to inherently be “Save as Draft,” and I think that’s right because if you click on Manage, then on Posts lets say (and it’s the same for Pages), right under the words “Manage Posts” are some options that look like this:

    All Posts | Published (#) | Draft (#)

that you can then click on to see all, published or draft.

As I said, that’s my take on it anyway; hopefully that works.

<sigh> What I am trying to communicate/slash complain about here is that the former “draft” option hid the posts in my own view of the blog. Now, the “saved” posts show up. OK, the are prefaced with the word “Private”, but they are still showing when I view my own blog.

I understand how the draft feature USED to work. It was great. Even more so when wordpress started automatically saving drafts for us. As far as I can tell, the draft feature has morphed into the private one, which I do not like as much. I am just hoping that the old draft is coming back (like the MIA spellchecker), or that it is hidden someplace that someone can point me to…

Private applies to published posts. Just leave ‘unpublished’ in the drop-down box when you save the post. Click on Manage>posts and you’ll see it among the drafts.

    @barsbythebook
Eeek! I’ve not run into that problem – none of my drafts are showing up on my view of my blog. Did you check to see that the ones you believe are Draft are truly Draft (show up under Draft) vs. published but marked Private?

    Ruthomp,
Have you tried it today? Or yesterday? When I am writing a post since yesterday, there is no option to “save as draft”. It’s save – and it shows up on my own view of the blog – or publish.

The drafts I saved before are still there under wraps, but the option to add to the draft collections has, as far as I can tell, disappeared. I keep a post “private” which seems to hide it from the general public, but it still shows when I view the blog.

    EllaElla,
What is a private published post? How is it private if it is published?

I just did (you had me scared!) and it seems to be working for me. I checked to make sure that Publish Status was on ‘Unpublished’ and I clicked Save. I went into my Drafts and there’s the new one I just saved. OH – could that be it? Is (for some reason) your Publish Status defaulting to ‘Published’ instead of ‘Unpublished’?

  • Unknown's avatar

@barsby – this might help you. Just substitute Unpublished (now the default) for Draft in the first instance:

    What is the Post Status?

@ellaella – how can I “ask you a question?” The vast majority of the posts on the forums are people talking about issues they’re having, and I just have a question about something you said in two different posts here (unrelated) that confused me…and I’m not thinking I want to post a new topic! Is it possible to communicate with someone outside of the forums? Thanks.

OK, I guess wordpress just got rid of explicit “draft” and now all saves are directly to draft, where they are still invisible, even to yourself. Not sure why they changed it, but whatever.

Thanks everyone for your help & Cheers!

Same problem–Save becomes Published–had to mark it “Private” to remove it from world view. The word “Draft” no longer appears anywhere for me.
