What happened to editing photo galleries?

  • Unknown's avatar

I went to add photos to two galleries this morning and it wouldn’t let me insert a new photo. Yesterday I could click on the gallery and a tool would appear to allow me to insert a new photo into the gallery. Now it will not. I thought that maybe the gallery photo limit had been reached, but I created a test gallery and after one photo, it would not let me add another.

    What gives?

I’m having exactly the same problem as Flordiagator80. I can see there has been changes made to the media gallery, which are good, but not being able to edit a gallery from within a page or a post is a problem. What’s the fix? I am using the Thirty Fourteen theme. The blog I need help with is http://www.sv-takeiteasy.com

I to am having the same problem. I can’t find the gallery to access it. Nor can I edit the gallery from within the page edit window. The edit tools for the gallery no longer show up in the page edit?

Also, images that once displayed in the slide show seem to have disappeard. The thumbnail is still in the library, but when I click on it to edit details the image is missing?

I was also able to replicate this issue. I’ll tag the thread for staff assistance.

I cleared my cache and cookies, as suggested. Once I restarted Firefox, the icons appeared to edit the gallery… but it wouldn’t go anywhere. I couldn’t even delete it with the X.

So I downloaded Google Chrome… and logged in… and attempted to edit my gallery… and it worked.

    Maybe the problem is Firefox??

Well, I don’t believe WordPress would limit itself that way (not planning with Firefox in mind) and would have tested with the current Firefox (which I use).

A different question. I am new to WP. Does WP just launch major changes to the functions without any notification or explanation?

  • @floridagator80, @jemelanson21

This could be connected to the changes in the post editor. The thread has been tagged for staff, so it’s best if we stop posting here for now: threads are handled by staff based on the timestamps and every new reply moves the thread to the back of the queue, so please be patient.

Does WP just launch major changes to the functions without any notification or explanation?

People who’ve been here since the start of WordPress say that’s how it goes, so best to learn to be adaptable and report bugs if and when they arise, like we’re doing here.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for reporting this issue, and my apologies for the trouble with this. We’re investigating the issue and I’ll post here with updates as I get them.

If anyone is using a browser other than Firefox and is having the same issue, please let me know what browser you’re using (including the version number) so we can investigate that as well. Thanks!

    – jeremeylduvall (another Happiness Engineer) pointed me to this thread, thanks!
Same issue – RECENTLY can’t edit Gallery (add, delete, or rearrange images; change style of Gallery) using Firefox v.31.0 on Macintosh OS 10.6.8, but CAN edit Gallery using GOOGLE CHROME v.36.0.1985.125 Hope there is a quick fix for my favourite Firefox, e.g. preference or permission change.

In Firefox, you can still manipulate the Gallery in the “Edit Post” window by selecting “Text” mode (which actually means code) and changing some code, e.g. change gallery type or image order in this line:
    [gallery type="slideshow" ids="11578,11576,11577,11580,11581,11582"]
    – HOWEVER, I would prefer to get WYSIWYG editing back!

Yes, the text editing is a solution, but one to a problem that shouldn’t exist in the first place. If someone can find a way to cut out gallery editing in Firefox, the should be able to find a way to make it work again … or more simply return to the previous code.

Currently working for me in FF 30, although I see there’s an update downloading.

    Will check again momentarily.

    Works in FF 31 too.

  • @floridagator80
The culprit seems to be the newest Firefox update as my galleries were working fine until the exact moment Firefox updated from 30 to 31 and no other browsers appear to be affected, so we can’t blame WordPress for this one. They have no way of knowing what a new browser version will do to the site until the browser version is released. It’s just coincidence that the new Firefox version happened at the same time as the editor changes.

I’ve been informed by a staff member in a different thread that the developers have been able to replicate the problem, so they’re working on it now. In my experience, once they’re able to pin down the cause to a problem like this it gets resolved fairly quickly.

  • @justjennifer
Strange that it’s still working for you in Firefox 31. Must be other factors in play as well then, as it’s still not working for me.

  • Unknown's avatar

@kokkieh- FF is not my usual browser. You’ve danced your cache and cookies?

  • @justjennifer
I have. Not a huge issue for me as I don’t use galleries that often, but I reckon the more information we can give staff (and users), the better :)

    Hi all,

I got word from one of our developers that this issue should be fixed. If you’re still having trouble, please clear your browser’s cache and try again.

If that doesn’t do it for you, please let me know so we can continue investigating the issue. :)

  • @rachelmcr
It’s working again for me, thanks :-D

Editing Gallery using Firefox 31.0 on Macintosh is working again. But I had a Firefox crash when I tried to open a new window to confirm a URL – have reported that to Firefox – and haven’t been able to duplicate that problem (fortunately!)
