What happened to editing photo galleries?
-
Hi there,
Right now, editing photo galleries is best suited for the laptop. Editing the galleries on the iPad (both in-browser and in-app) is mainly available through the text editor, which displays HTML code not the preview of your images.
When I attempted to edit the galleries on both Safari and Chrome on my iPad Mini within the Visual Editor, the result wasn’t ideal (it crashed or the images expanded outside of the post box).

I’m using Chrome 36, and the pencil button from the Dashboard Editor does not respond when I click on it. Also, while initially creating the gallery, drag & drop also does not work.
-
Hi @dcecile,
Can you let me know if you experience the same thing when testing out another browser like Firefox?
Also, when you say “drag & drop”, can you let me know what you’re referring to? Are you trying to drag and drop the gallery around your post? If so, that isn’t a supported action. However, when you’re editing a gallery, you should be able to drag and drop the order of the photos.
-
@jeremeylduvall: Clearing my cache in Chrome didn’t help, but everything worked fine in Firefox. In Chrome, it’s the drag-and-drop to reorder photos within a gallery that isn’t working.
By the way, have you had any luck reproducing the problem on your side?
-
Hey @dcecile,
Unfortunately, I haven’t had any luck reproducing this on my side as of yet. I’m using Chrome 36, and this is what I’m experiencing (screencast):
Just to clarify, you mentioned you’re using the Dashboard Editor, you’re seeing the following URL in your address bar correct?
http://yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin
I just want to clarify because we updated the new editor at wordpress.com/post to include gallery editing options.

Hello, I also can’t edit my galleries on a Page (not a post) at http://lanalachyani.com/handmade-cards/. I’m using Chrome, I’ve cleared cookies and cache. I’ve tried clicking on the pen icon in the top left corner of the box, double clicking on the box and even clicking the X to delete the gallery and none of those buttons are working. I’ve ended up deleting all the photos using the backspace button and recreating them to see if it will work and it doesn’t. I need to be able to add a couple of photos every few days. Please assist. Thank you.

Yup, it’s at my http://yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin that I’m seeing the Chrome problems (reordering photos, editing/removing galleries after creation).
Is there any chance that we’re getting confused by different versions of WordPress or plugin software? My blog is hosted straight off of wordpress.com. (Or maybe it’s a theme-specific issue?)
-
@lanalachyani – Can you try using Firefox? I’m trying to narrow down if this is a Chrome-specific issue or not.
@dcecile – Everyone at WordPress.com runs on the same version and plugins aren’t allowed so I don’t think that’s it. Can you point me to a gallery on your site that you’re trying to edit? Just copy and paste the URL here.

https://vftos0.wordpress.com/2014/08/16/clc-trip-to-xitou/ without the Carousel reference.
When you are in the Classic Post Editor on your site, if you click anywhere on the Gallery area you should see a pencil icon appear in the upper left corner of the Gallery area. Clicking on it will bring up the Edit Gallery screen in the Media Manager where you can drag and drop the images.
-
;) Yeah I know, that’s what I did when I used Firefox, but when I click on the icon in Chrome, nothing happens. I just tried it again right now.
-
I’m using Chrome 36 on Win7Pro without problem.
Is it possible you have a pop-up blocker enabled in Chrome?
-
Hmm, that doesn’t seem to be the problem. Chrome didn’t give me any “popup blocked” notifications in the address bar. I also tried enabling popups for my site, and I tried disabling Adblock Plus, but that didn’t have any effect.
I’m still curious about the WordPress version. Is there any way that we can all check what version of WP we’re running our tests on?
-
Everyone on WordPress.com is using the same version, which is somewhere between the last standalone WP core release and the next release. Version numbers have no relevance here.
-
OK, I see. But, if we can assume that all wordpress.com sites are running the same software & plugins, then should we be looking for client-side differences?
-
Hey Dan,
Thanks for passing along that link.
OK, I see. But, if we can assume that all wordpress.com sites are running the same software & plugins, then should we be looking for client-side differences?
I’m not 100% sure what you mean here, but as JustJennifer mentioned, everyone at WordPress.com is running on the same “version” of WordPress. So, in theory, if you’re using the exact same setup (Chrome 36), the edit photo galleries option should be working.
Would it be possible for you to take a screencast of the issue? I haven’t been able to recreate the issue, which is making it a bit hard to troubleshoot. If you could take a screencast, I could see this in action.
Also, can you make sure that all of your browser add-ons are disabled? You can find these by navigating to Chrome -> Preferences -> Extensions.
-
I get it that all WordPress.com sites are running the same code, but as a Happiness Engineer, did you run your tests on an official WordPress.com site, or on an internal test site?
(The screencast will be thoroughly boring, just me clicking and nothing happening, but I’ll try to get to it soon.)
