What happened to my URL
-
Some weeks ago I offered to create a free WordPress site for a friend. I checked that the URL jdremovals.wordpress.com was available and set up the URL for use later.
Now, when I come to build the site, I find that the URL has been changed to some random machine generated URL like fearless-myemailaddress.wordpress.com.
If I enter jdremovals.wordpress.com in a browser address bar I see a WordPress holding page saying Coming Soon.
Is this a trick by WordPress to encourage me to pay for the URL and how do I claim it, find out who owns or has hijacked it, and obtain a transfer authorisation code? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Why would you think the site has been hacked? You have created the free site but not launched it yet hence the “coming soon” message. Perhaps you created that site using a different account to the one you are currently posting from. In that case log out here and log back in with the correct username or email address associated with the site along with the password you chose.

Thanks for the reply.
I didn’t say it was hacked.
I said the URL I created myself had been replaced in my list of sites with a machine generated URL which concatenated “fearless-” with elements of my email address.
This suggests that some automated process had replaced the URL as it is now obviously machine-generated. There’s no way I would have created the “fearless-” URL myself, and I don’t have another WordPress account.
There’s no sign of my original URL in my WordPress account, though there’s a holding page online with that URL.
I’m trying to understand how that might have happened, and how to reclaim my original URL.
The only possibility that occurs to me is that the original URL might have some time-limit associated with its use for a free site, after which it is “repossessed” by WordPress”.
I say that because there was a gap of a couple or more weeks between creating the URL and starting to build the site, as we’d agreed what the URL should be, checked it was available, then friend went on hols before we decided which template to use.davidcmoorsgmailcom · MemberNov 12, 2024 10:41 am

Yes I meant to say your word “hijacked” not “hacked”. What is the full URL you are concerned about? As a volunteer all I can see is that you are posting from a WordPress.com account called davidcmoorsgmailcom and were asking why jdremovals.wordpress.com showed “coming soon”. Is it possible you created that site under a different account/email address?

Again, nothing happened to your URL nor does wordpress.com change your URL for whatever reason or is there a timelimite on a free wordpress.com site!!
As @themagicrobot (one of the last standing well-trusted contributers to this forum) stated you are simply logged in to the wrong account. One way or another whether you believe or not: you did create another account. So again: log out from current and log in again tot he accoutn owning your “missing site”. Et voila, problem solved.
