What happened to my website?

Hello!
Our website was The Daily Runner (dailyrunneronline.com), an online college newspaper. Last week, our domain existed and was working fine. One of our staff tried to visit today and the entire page was ads related to carpeting? The bottom of the page says ‘This webpage was generated by the domain owner using Sedo Domain Parking,’ which I know we did not do. Searching on the WordPress website, our domain is still ‘taken.’ Did our domain expire and someone else buy it? If so, why did the email connected to this account and the website receive no communication? We never received any emails regarding our loss of domain, nor the grace period in which to renew our subscription. I would just like some answers on what happened, why, and if it can be fixed. We had years of articles on the website and none of it exists anymore, without any warning. (If warning was given, I would like to know where it was sent – if possible – to follow up that lead).
A lot of the answer is specific to this case, so it would be super helpful if someone from WordPress could be in touch.

Hello, it looks like dailyrunneronline.com was registered through 1and1.com Have you contacted them?
Looking at a cached version of your website, it looks like your site is using the standalone WordPress software and wasn’t hosted here on WordPress.com.
Just to clarify, this support forum assists users of WordPressdotcom hosted sites and the guidance provided here may not be relevant to DIY WordPress.org sites hosted with an external hosting provider (e.g. Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.). For help with a site using the open source WP (org) software you’ll want to head over to https://wordpress.org/support where they likely have more experience with the type of issue you are having.
