What happened to posts lost when I exported to a different WP domain?

For WP staff: I have had a miserable experience moving from one WP domain to another. First, I lost all followers without knowing it would happen. Now, I find that when I exported content I lost first two months of our posts, which included some that were very important. What happened? Are they gone forever or do they still exist on a server where they can be recaptured? Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello there,
I’m sorry to hear that happened and have flagged this thread for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting.

  • Which blogs were you importing/exporting to/from?

  • Those are both exactly the same blog, two domains mapped to the same WordPress.com blog. You wouldn’t need to export/import or transfer anything.

This all began with our needing to use a different URL (www.backinrivercity) for the blog we had up at http://www.eddiesettles.com. That blog was named Back in River City but the URL was http://www.eddiesettles.com . We had purchased but were not using http://www.backinrivercity.com (although mistakenly some of our posts were duplicated there). After trying to determine the correct process to use for redirecting (this took two weeks, even using a friend who is a computing consultant), I turned to this forum for confirmation of the correct procedure.

We were advised to pay for the $13 upgrade to redirect. Then we were told here to export content from eddiesettles.com to backinrivercity.com to avoid losing the content from eddiesettles.com when we redirected. So I exported/imported and redirected. But I noticed after the redirect that the first two months of content on eddiesettles.com is missing from backinrivercity.com. My question is, is this content still present on your server so that I can recapture and repost to backinrivercity.com? Presently, I am unable to see any content on eddiesettles.com because all traffic redirects. I was told here that when you redirect a site it ceases to exist. It appears that you are suggesting that they both exist and mirror each other. This is hopelessly confusing. Please explain what has happened and point out any incorrect information I was given previously. Thank you.

  • Ah, ok. I see what happened there.

First, go to the Dashboard of the redirected blog, and temporarily stop the redirection from Store -> Domains in the Dashboard. Then, try the export/import again. it won’t duplicate existing posts, and should pick up what it missed.

Once that’s done, let me know, and I’ll transfer your subscribers.

I tried this once last week and again now. Received confirmation email that the import was successful on June 22 but I don’t see the older posts (prior to April). Please help!

    Thank you!

  • The posts prior to April are still in the Trash sub-section (of the Posts section) on the Destination blog. This means they are counted as existing and will not be duplicated.

Please empty the Trash and try again.

I restored them from Trash and now they are back in place. Thanks so much!

Okay, last request for awhile (I hope). Would you make sure that our full list of subscribers has been restored? I’m not sure if they are already there or not. I have seen different #’s when I sign in; we also sent out several hundred emails and asked people to sign up as a follower a second time.

  • I have transferred your subscribers as requested.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!
