What happened to RSS Widget?

In the past, the widget showed options like the external Website’s name.

Site: (email visible only to moderators and staff).
    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

    Hi there!

Could you share a bit more details about the issue you’re having? Are you using RSS widgets on your site? Are they not showing the name of the source site? Which site/RSS link are you referring to specifically?

Once you’ve shared those details, we’ll be able to investigate closely to see what’s going on.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

    Three problems.

(1). Footer 1. The Widget Block for adding an RSS feed from an outside URL (not mine) is missing key options. It just says “put in the URL.” No space to put the name of the site at all.

Go to my blog. Scroll down to the very bottom. The blog has three Footers. They are all RSS feeds.

Yesterday or so, I decided to delete two from Footer 1. I added a new RSS. As you can see, it does not show the website name in a hyperlink. It only shows the feed’s excerpts.

(2). Featured Sidebar. I want to add another video. It went smoothly before. But now I don’t know which Widget I’m supposed to use. Help!

(3). Why doesn’t my blog show 3 Sidebars? Is there a “screen width” setting I don’t know about.

    Many thanks.

    Hi there!

Thanks for the details! I’ve looked at your site based on your questions and here are my findings:

(1). Footer 1. The Widget Block for adding an RSS feed from an outside URL (not mine) is missing key options. It just says “put in the URL.” No space to put the name of the site at all.

The RSS widgets you previously inserted (those that have a dedicated title field) are the legacy RSS widgets. Those legacy widgets are no longer available. The one you’ve inserted in Footer 1 is the RSS block (which is replacing the Legacy RSS widget). The RSS block doesn’t have a title field. See how it works here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/rss-block/

So you’d need to insert a paragraph or heading block above the RSS block and add a link manually to that heading text. This is how you’d need to do it in a blog post or a page. The block widget is basically the same thing as a blog post/page editor, so you’d need to set up this area like this.

Since you already have the legacy RSS widget, you can duplicate one from Footer 2 and add the new URL. Here’s how to do that:

Then, you can move the new (duplicated) legacy RSS widget to Footer 1 by following this:

This is a temporary workaround that you can try for now. But eventually, you’d want to start using the blocks (Heading + RSS block combo).

(2). Featured Sidebar. I want to add another video. It went smoothly before. But now I don’t know which Widget I’m supposed to use. Help!

On your featured sidebar, you have a couple of “Legacy Text” widgets where you inserted videos using the “Add Media” button. The Legacy Text widget is phased out, but you can still add videos by using the Embed block. And if you want a title above the video, insert the Heading block first.

In other words, you’d want to insert the following blocks:

    1. Heading block for the title.
    2. Embed block to embed the YouTube video.

I’ve recorded a video showing how to do that. See here: https://d.pr/v/CJ97g4

(3). Why doesn’t my blog show 3 Sidebars? Is there a “screen width” setting I don’t know about.

I’m seeing three sidebars (one featured sidebar and two sidebars below it). See this screenshot: https://d.pr/i/h50ELb

If you’re not seeing it like this, you probably need to make the screen wider, increase the display resolution (from your computer settings), or make sure your browser is not zoomed in.

Sidebars will eventually disappear as the screen size becomes narrower. For example, on mobile devices, you’d not see the sidebar until you’ve scrolled down past the main content. So the narrower the screen gets, the fewer sidebars will show up on the side of the screen.

    Hope that helps!
