what happened to wordpress.com homepage’s tag cloud
-
The whole right half of the homepage is missing for me. It actually didn’t look like that the 1st time I visited but the 2nd time and there after, the right half of the screen is missing. It looks awkward http://sensico.wordpress.com/files/2009/08/wpfrontpage1.png

Egads, every time I look at that wordpress home page it looks worse.
Why do they have “TypePad is the world’s premier blogging service” on the typepad site? They are very small compared to WP aren’t they, and WP passed them up long ago?
-
You mean in number of people using it? That is probably right. It doesn’t necessarily make the ‘premier’ wrong, though. Whatever motto companies market themselves with is up to them. I used to be with TypePad before, and in terms of functionality and adaptability, particularly if you are a business blogger, TypePad is the better choice, if you don’t want to go for wordpress.org. However, comparing those two would be like comparing apples and oranges, they are very very different blogging platforms. Besides, TypePad is a paid service, that alone qualifies for the term ‘premier’. Anyway, I just used it as an example of a front page hat tells you straight away what the whole thing is about, there is no ‘all fluff and no substance’ here. It makes you want to start blogging, the new wordpress.com doesn’t…IMO.

Oh…kewl…just noticed…now wordpress.com put up a poll in the sidebar where users can leave feedback.
-
It’s a cluttered mess. Why do we have to click through pages to find what we’re looking for? It used to be all on one easy-to-navigate page. I also liked how the posts on CNN blogs etc were in one column, by real bloggers on the other, so I knew which ones to avoid. Now there’s no way to tell.

I understand you reasons for bumping this, but leaving an actual comment is likely to generate more responses and keep this thread alive than a simple ‘bump’. IMHO.
-
It’ll also avoid that “looking like a noob” thing.
I will say that aesthetically I like the design. I’m quite sure, however, that it’s not the world’s most efficient for delivering information. And I sure hope they fixed that “missing ‘get a blog’ link” for existing users issue.
-
I too am unhappy with the current status of the redesigned homepage. I like the magazine look of the featured blogs. However, I am a huge tag surfer/tag cloud user. More than half the time no posts come up in tag surfer, and now the tag cloud is gone.
I can tell you I have also seen a huge decrease in the number of random hits my blog has gotten since the change.
I am seriously considering moving my blog if this is how the home page for wordpress is going to stay.
-
I don’t think I’d go so far as to ditch wp.com just because they decided to turn a good homepage into …. I’m not sure what to call it, actually.
-
Most of the views my blog got came from people surfing the tag cloud. Please bring it back.

-
Wow…called a noob for bumping a message. Sorry, I offended you “rain”. I’m not a noob on WP…forums yes. But seems like you have everything under control. Carry on.
-
Someone should lose their job over this. It shows how out of touch you are with your users to make looking for tags some kind of daily scavenger hunt. WordPress is now in need of health care after too much reform. In baseball they call it over-managing.
-
LOL, I don’t think it’s that serious. I’m sure after seeing this thread they’ll put the tag cloud up. I’m still getting a lot of hits from people using tags here so people are able to find what they’re looking for.
-
As a first-time visitor to WordPress.com, all I see is lots of words about how many bloggers, words, posts and comments there are at any given time on WordPress.com, 11 “sample” blogs, lots of links to the same free features page and a place to sign up. My first thought would be, “where are all the blogs they’re talking about?”.
I don’t know that there’s a tag cloud page.
I don’t know that there’s a BOTD or “Fastest Growing Blogs” page.
Just 11 blogs to sample.
Can someone please explain to me how this helps the larger WordPress.com community get discovered and read? I feel like I’m missing something here.
-
I didn’t even realize the “get a blog” link wasn’t there LOL I was too busy worrying about my own damn selfish needs. ;) I’m sure that’s the first thing that’ll get fixed. maybe they have some cool design that’ll oooh and ahhh us when they actually get it going. while I don’t enjoy the new magazine look, I’m sure they are getting quite a response from the survey that they’ll change it to something that we all can get something out of.

I didn’t say I was jumping ship today. I will be patient and see what WP has in store for a finalized version of the home page. I will remain optimistic. But truely without the tag cloud and with tag surfer showing NO POSTS the four times I have tried to use it today… I have to think about long term.
